Well I was going to say that the fan is just continuously on and loud after I did a clean install of XP... until I saw that fan speed thing 1-5... well that's fixed but whenever I try to change the brightness the laptop makes the sound and the OSD comes up but it doesn't move up or down and the brightness is stuck at brightest... What am I doing wrong?

Hm. My fan is always ON too, I did not know this i because of XP. Is there different in vista?

Check the support page for your model, there are instructions and drivers for proper XP install, everythin is working fine on mine.

I have got an SZ71WN/C and i use Vista Business and i do not have any fan issues at all. I also use stamina mode all of the time. If i put my ear close to my laptop i can hear something as you would expect. I also have not changed any default settings with the CPU. I also run my laptop in power saver mode when it is plugged in.

Hey another thing would anyone know how to get that battery saving thing that they have in vista? You know the one where you can choose to keep the battery a 50% charged?

Do you know what I would recommend:
Instal Vista Business, then Service Pack 1 and optimize your system.
If your XP laptop was a bit older its stiull faster and its reasonably trouble free.

I know, I hated Vista as well before my SZ, and I hated 16:10 ratio aspect screens, since I have my SZ I suddenly like them.

I don't really hate vista at all, I have a 64bit version of Vista Business on my desktop. I just hate the added bloatware.... then again I hate loosing all the added features such as being able to change my brightness :p.

I would not call Sony specific utilities, bloatwares. They are there for a purpose, that is to work with the model they come with.

    cheers ...

Sounds like you uninstalled something that wasn't really bloat :)

I did the same thing (where brightness hotkeys wouldn't work). If you reinstall the "Vaio Event Service" or something like that it should fix it.

I just got my SZ, and still have the original install. It is my first experience with Vista. (Experimenting with Aero, but don't see the point of that at all. Will disable that soon.)

Where does one find that battery saving thing you mention?

Also, someone in this thread mentioned an included utility that regulates the fan speed. Where is that?

That's what I meant, I hate the bloatware but I hate loosing my laptop's capabilities. I reinstalled the original stuff anyways, I just couldn't take it anymore. I guess having to uninstall norton, quicken, aol, paintshop, etc. will have to do.

as for the the battery thing it's called "battery care function" you can turn it on from there just type it ino the search bar from the start menu.
