    I want to get a good Sony TZ series (11 inch)
    that falls on the range of SG$1500-SG$2000

    Problem is, i have totally no idea which TZ series to get.
    I mean, why are there a lot of types?
    Anyways, i hope you guys can recommend me the best to go.

    These feature is a must!
    - small and portable (thats why must be 11 inch ones)
    - must have at least optical drive (DVD-Dual Layered if possible)
    - must have good battery life
    - must be fast for working life (MS Office, Internet, etc)
    - good enough for certain games? (Warcraft 3, WOW)

    Or if there's another laptop you guys can recommend, i don't mind too.
    But must meet those requirements if possible.

    Also, I don't mind topping up additional SG$500.00 if say i can get a slightly better specs (In which case perhaps you guys can recommend me a newer models as well? Intel ATOM perhaps?)

    There are several different models of the TZ, depending upon specs, finish, and revision series - and the model numbers vary from country to country. In the US there is the VGN-TZ100, TZ200, and TZ300 series, with different sub-models (ie, VGN-TZ191N/X). In Singapore, the models are VGN-TZ1, TZ2, and TZ3 (ie, VGN-TZ28GN is 2nd series). I'm not 100% certain, but it seems most of the 1st generation TZ were effected by the recent safety recall, some of the 2nd-gen, and none of the 3rd generation. So you might want to take that into consideration, otherwise just find one that fits the specs you need and your price range.

    - small and portable (thats why must be 11 inch ones) - Yes it is very portable, especially for having internal DVD.

    - must have at least optical drive (DVD-Dual Layered if possible) Is available on most models, other than the high-end SSD with 2nd HDD ones.

    - must have good battery life It's very good. Rated at 11hr for standard battery & 16.5 for larger one (half those amounts for real-world life). I usually get around 5 hours with standard battery.

    - must be fast for working life (MS Office, Internet, etc) My 1.2GHz TZ is very zippy for apps, internet, and watching videos. I highly recommend getting 2GB of RAM though, especially if you'll be using Vista.

    - good enough for certain games? (Warcraft 3, WOW) Not sure, haven't tried any. Definitely not suitable for newer games, but I've read that some older games are okay. If gaming's important, maybe consider the new Sony TT that has somewhat better graphics.

    The Atom CPU is only available in netbooks right now, so that would probably mean no optical drive, slower than Core 2 Duo, and also only older games.

    In Singapore, the VGN-TZ36 would probably be a good match if you can find it for less than suggested retail (SG$2600) and have enough left to get a 2GB RAM module. Also, keep a look out for the TZ's successor, the TT, as the pricing should be comparable, but with overall better specs. I would definitely consider the TT if you can find one in your area, and in your price range.

    Just some ideas, though.. good luck!

    i should be looking forward for~

    I Saw the TT,

    wha?????
    ok, that sucks :(

    i was under the impression that

    since DVD-R can burn CD-R
    bluray can burn both DVD-R and CD-R
    (I dont know about DVD-DL)

    I'm pretty sure the BluRay only comes on the high-end versions of the TT. You'll still be able to get DVD burner on most of the other TT models.

    not many people have blu ray players but if your planning on watching movies with the tt through hdmi cable to your high res tv or screen I would get the blu ray player. Other than that I would go for the normal dvd burner unless you plan on backing up alot of data. In which blu ray would also be more beneficial since its disc can hold 50GB

    The bluray disc though cost a bomb -_-.
    Also with my work i mainly have to just backup documents that are less then probably 1mb and since floppy is out of the question................

    as for bluray players, i already own a ps3
    (in fact i dont know why some people would spend US$799 for a bluray player when they can just spend US$399 for a ps3 console)

    I personally have no need for a BluRay player or recorder yet, especially at the loss of not being able to also burn DVD-R. But that's more of a personal call.

    You might want to consider using SD cards to back up your small 1MB files. Both the TZ and TT have internal Memory Stick and SDHC card readers.

    Other than the TZ36, the TT190 seems like a good match. Right now it's $2125 USD, a couple bills over your budget, but I'm sure the price will drop once it's been on the market for a little while.

    Might've been wrong on that, sorry. I'm not 100% sure about the TT, but there are BluRay burners on the market that do burn DVD-R and dual-layer.

    I'll see what I can find later today. Just keep in mind that getting a BluRay TT instead of DVD TT will be even further out of the price range you're after.

    Yup, the TT's BluRay reads and writes to both DVD-R and DVD-R DL..

    * BD-R DL Read : 2x max.
    * BD-R DL Write : 1x max.
    * BD-R Read : 2x max.
    * BD-R Write : 2x max.
    * BD-RE DL Read : 2x max.
    * BD-RE DL Write : 1x max.
    * BD-RE Read : 2x max.
    * BD-RE Write : 2x max.
    * BD-ROM Read : 2x max.
    * Blu-ray Disc™ Support : Yes (read/write) (BD-R/-RE/ROM/DVD±RW/±R DL/RAM Drive)
    * CD Read : 24x max.
    * CD-R Write : 16x max.
    * CD-RW Write : 10x max.
    * DVD Read : 8x max.
    * DVD+R DL Write : 4x max.
    * DVD+R Write : 8x max.
    * DVD+RW Write : 4x max.
    * DVD-R DL Write : 4x max.
    * DVD-R Write : 8x max.
    * DVD-RAM Read : 5x max.
    * DVD-RAM Write : 5x max.
    * DVD-RW Write : 4x max.

    But, the BluRay option also adds an additional $500USD to the price.

    Another question though.
    Some people say that it's not a worth it deal :(
    They say i'd be better off getting the 13 inch Dell XPS
    or even the new HP laptop. What do you guys think?

    At the end of the day it's a question about aesthetics and taste. But for the more objectively things: the keyboard, screen quality and size and weight, the TZ doesn't have any serious contenders. Likewise, I would personally say that looks and beauty speak FOR the TZ all the way. It has IMO become a CLASSIC model already.

    Hope Sony make the necessary minor adjustments or modifications that the TT needs to make it just as beautiful as the TZ.

    Umm i want to ask as well.
    If say i get the sony TZ, can i get the blueray writer later?
    I mean.....

    It's just an optical drive right?
    Im assuming that it's inter-changeable?

    You can add one, but you dont have enough hard drive space to burn bluray except just watch.
