Well guys, after a few days of debating with myself whether to go with the SR or the Z, I decided to splurge and pulled the trigger on the Z!

    Ordered the pre-built VGN-Z540EBB:

    Centrino 2 P8600 2.40Ghz | 3 GB DDR3 1066 Ghz | 13.1 1366x768 NVIDIA GeForce® 9300M GS | 320GB @ 5400rpm | Vista Home Premium SP1

    Student discount: ($185)
    "Price Drop": ($210)

Called and got the $300 discount with purchase of two accessories + service plan, so I went to the neoprene case + spindle of CD-Rs + 3 year service plan.

    Awesome deal!!

I really hope the Free Mobility package deal also works, but I'm seeing reports now that it doesn't work for purchases from SonyStyle! :(
I'm going to try sending it in anyways.

Oh yeah... I'm upgrading from a 4+ yr old VGN-S260, do you guys think I'm going to notice much of a difference? ;)

Thanks for all the help everybody, cheers!!

That is the same model that i bought and returned because it didn't have the built in Sprint WWAN. Other than that, awesome laptop and you should enjoy it.

Really? I thought it would work for all Z/SR/BZ models if bought from a Sony authorized reseller or Sony themselves.

I think you will see a tremendous performance upgrade as did GrooveOne when he upgraded from his S to the Z.

I don't think that this can be called discount, after you add up the 2 accessories and the 3year plan. The 3 year plan alone is $350!!!

Yes but the plan is essentially free since they are taking off $300. My Z with the 2 year and the 2 accessorires was around $2300...with the $300 off it was down to $2000

Some people swear by service plans... and me, I do the opposite. Never will I spend a dime on service plans..

To me, service plans are like owning a pickup truck only for driving in the snow in chicago where i live. It's big, expensive and you won't REALLY need it often but when you do; it sure makes you feel good to have a truck ;)

Well, I probably wouldn't have gone with the service plan otherwise, but with the $300 back, the service plan was virtually free (If you go with the 2 year service plan, it is free, but I decided why not go with 3).

Anyways, yeah, I have absolutely no doubt that this is going to be a huge huge step from my S260. This has been a great daily use notebook, and it's still going pretty strong. It'll be a great backup.

But man, the Z is going to be sweee eeeet!
