I made the recovery disks and plan on buying some tape for the battery (its loose...) Any software, applications, or drivers that I need to install or delete to make my life easier? Thanks.

    windowsupdate and sony's update first

    I removed (from memory):
    Office (60 day trial only)
    Anything aol related
Anything Norton related (I use MCafee)
can't remember what else, but I think there were a few useless things.

    then what I usually download:

M$'s anti-spyware (still in beta, but beats the others in benchmarks)
    Divx/quicktime (for viewing videos)
    winrar
    winamp
konfabulator (get 2.1.1 from download.com, widgets from konfabulator.com, 3.0 has too many bugs)
xp powertoys (from microsoft, some are very useful)
    firefox
thunderbird (if you're not using outlook)
hdtach/3dmark05 (if you're into benchmarking stuff)
updated msn messenger (I uninstall the default one in xp, newer one has alot more features)
OR Gaim, can interact with most IM programs

How loose is your battery? I thought they fixed that problem for the S580?

The battery moves around, but it doesnt fall out on its own. I just expected it to be a little tighter fit (similar to a cell phone battery fit.)

In the 3 weeks I've had this system, the only time I have noticed the loose battery is when I first got it. Afterwards, my only concern has been to not block the front vents so that my S580 won't overheat.

Have you tryed to undervolt your laptop? Does it overheat even when doing simple task as surfing and using word?

Sorry, I'm not being clear. It's been very cold the last few weeks and I like to wear layers of clothes to keep warm. When I put the S580 on my lap, my pants usually ride up and block the front vents. I can tell when I'm blocking the vents because the right palm rest gets very warm.

When I leave my laptop on my desk, it's fine. I played World of Warcraft the last 2 nights and even though my laptop is running at full power, the fan is keeping everything very cool. You only feel a warm breeze coming out the right side.

I was in the same position you are SaMan. I took a chance on the S580 and have been very happy.

Oh, to answer your other question, while using Word, Excel, and Powerpoint in class, the S580 stays very cool. The same with surfing. The only time the fan really kicks in is when I'm playing games.
