I just got back from a SonyStyle store. Took a look at the TX 670 (the only TX they had).

The weight was amazing. Truly amazing.

The screen was nice, but not amazing (to me). In the "normal" 96 dpi setting, text on the SonyStyle website looked quite small. Much smaller than on the Dell 710m I looked at, due to the TX having a slightly smaller screen combined with a slightly higher resolution.

The white background of the Sony pages appeared "sparkly" (for lack of a better term), which I found distracting. Unfortunately, the laptop was totally locked down, so I was unable to look at ANY other web pages. It was also completely stripped of software, so I couldn't even look at MS Word.

The price, though, is just too difficult to swallow. Especially when I'm not *that* comfortable with the size of text. Again, as I said in another thread, it's not that I can't afford it. I can. It's a matter of whether or not it's "worth it" to spend twice as much (literally) for the TX, vs. the Dell 710m.

The way I feel right this minute, I will most likely NOT get the TX.

Just thought I'd share my comments, in case anyone else out there might be in the same boat as me. :)

    It is amazing lil bugger!

And you do realise that you can change the size of text in windows and mostly every other program. it works fine for me.

To be honest, if the screen was a tad bigger (12"?) and/or the resolution was a tad smaller (1280?), I might really be tempted to buy the TX. But as it stands, with the price double that of the 710m, I just don't feel comfortable enough to pull the trigger. Even though I "have the money."

    Know what I mean?

Well ... I am in a very similar situation. I have a T150 (smaller screen, more weight, a little larger, different colors). Then my company decided to buy me a Dell (in my case, a 610. It's more of a boat than a laptop.) There is absolutely no comparison between a Dell and a Sony. There's nothing wrong with Dells. They are perfectly capable macines. But I take my Sony every time I have a choice. (Unfortunately, that's not often enough.)

Netspots is correct, especially if you code. Most text editors don't easily change the font size. And I like to keep lots of windows open - larger fonts means most of the advantages of a better resolution are lost. But better resolution also means a crisper display. And Sony's ultra-bright technology is awesome. I can see my Dell 15" display somewhat more easily than my Sony. But the difference is a lot less than you might think.

I think the TX is just too small. I know its an ultraportable but still.

Your feelings about the TX mimic those I felt before the SZ was announced. I liked the video card of the S, but longed for the lightness and build of the TX. The TX screen was just too small, and the real bummer was it's slow processor and crummy video card.

Then...along comes the SZ premium...which to me was the perfect middle-ground between the power of the S, and the size of the TX.
Throw in the genius of double video cards (speed or battery life) and it's (to me) the near-perfect package.

I'm extremely happy with my SZ160...for all the reasons that drew me to the good aspects of both the S and the TX.

Thanks for the recommendation, I appreciate that. The only problem I have with the SZ is its size. While it is pretty small, it's dimensions are larger than the Dell 710m. And, like the TX, it too is twice the price of the 710m. As a person who has owed MANY Dell computers (without any problems) it's hard to justify paying Sony's price. At this point I might just hold off for a bit, and see what happens. I already have a primary laptop (Dell 6000), so this purchase was just to give me a more mobile (smaller, lighter) laptop. I really do appreciate the tip, though. Thanks.

PS - it's posts like this one (URL below) that make me wonder if the Sony is really worth the extra money. Here's a quote from it:

"As far as an overall experience it's a bit dissapointing. For such an expensive machine you would expect Sony to get all the i's dotted and t's crossed and leave you with an overall satisfied feeling. This machine is not that."
