I spilled a tiny bit of coffee on the keyboard and the touchpad, the keys work but the touch pad does not. I dont feel comfortable taking it apart. I have full accident coverage with SONY. Should I wait to see if it starts working again, can use a mouse for now, or should I send it back to SONY, to deal with the headache of their "great customer service"?

you should've turned off your Z and unplugged your battery so no electricity goes through your Vaio... then open it up and clean up the spill... But yeah, if it doesnt work... i dunno if it will anymore? I guess u should wait to see if it works before you go through sony, but if i remember correctly taking apart the Z to get to the touchpad was hard? I don't remember...

I wish I had the free time to open it up... I may just wait for now and if it does not work I can ship it back to sony during my next vacation or something...

If you choose not to clean the inside, then wait for the coffe to dry, do not moove you computer to avoid expension of the wet zone.

If you do not want to open it up, remove battery and use distilled water to clean it out and leave it to dry for 1 to 2 days.

I strongly suggest distilled for one reason, it is pure water obtained through the process of boiling water, collecting the water vapour in a copper or stainless steel coil which cool the vapour transforming it back into water with 0 mineral content.

Distilled Water can be purchase at the local drugstore or grocery store.

    Best of luck

Thank you all for the tips... it has been 2 hours now and the touchpad seems to work fully (still with fingers crossed).
What I did was, I kept the z12 on and did not move it.

you should've turned it off and left out the battery... electricity + water on any electrical component = short circuit...

It's already too late for this advice, but turn it off, take the battery out. Get some alcohol (rubbing alcohol, 99%, not vokda =P) and LIGHTLy touch the exposed parts that got coffee on it. You can let a LITTLE bit drip in where the coffee spilled too. Then spray it lightly with compressed air. Then leave it for 24-48 hours. If it doesn't work then, send it in to sony.

This is one of the things I miss from the Thinkpads. The spill proof keyboards. You can pour a cup of coffee right on the keyboard and it'll just come out the bottom of the laptop.

    This is Sony, not thinkpad.

You miss the style meet substance, functionality meet design as well?

Is that a recent addition, my old T41-P from the venerable IBM days did not have any sort of spill protection.

It's been spillproof for at least 4 years. Maybe they have a patent.

NO! NO! NO! Never ever use what is labeled rubbing alcohol. It has a lot of other stuff (lubricants) that you do not want around electronics. You want isopropyl alcohol. I am sure that is what you meant, since you said 99%. But I just wanted to make sure folks realize that 99% is NOT rubbing alcohol.
