    Hi,

I did some searching before writing this message, so if you're going to thread crap telling me to search - go away. All the previous threads have been for the SZ series, not TX.

Anyhow, I purchased the Kensington 70W AC Power Supply for my TX850P/B. While I haven't connected it up, I've discovered that both the brochure inside showing which tips to use and the website do not reference support for the TX850P/B. Oddly, the TX2 series is supported according to their tip finder -- which is the TX770 series except in Europe. The tip finder indicates that the 70W will work and uses Tip N15.

I've written an email message to Kensington asking for help on determining which tip, if I need to go from 70W to 120W instead, and whether or not the TX850 is even supported. Can anyone help me that has a TX and bought one of these Kensington products?

I have both an IBM T40 series and this Sony, so I want to get an 'all-in-one' so I don't travel with two bricks.

    Thanks in advance.

Well, for posterity sake -- and because someone else may ask in the future...

I got an email response from Kensington today (Sunday) -- good on them for service around the clock. They currently have no supporting power adapters or tips for the TX850 or the TX3 series Sony Vaio.

I suppose I'm returning this unit to the store on my way home tomorrow now. Oh well. C'est la vie.

They are idiots. N15 should work fine. All that matters is voltage and enough amps.

So if I get the Kensington 120W unit with N15 tip, it should work fine for my TX850? I'm just a little wary of doing this since they're telling me outright that its not supported....

Look at the AC adapters from Sony. They will tell you which PC are compatible. TX850 uses 16V. That corresponds to VGP-AC16V8. The same adapter is used across the TX line because they all use 16V.

Now if the same adapter from Sony is good for the whole TX line the same should hold true of the Kensington.

Read the label on your TX850 AC adapter. It should say 16V 4A output. That is the same as most of the small model Sonys.

Search for VGP-AC16V8 on Sony's website. It will say that model is compatible with T, TX, and S270 models.

If you are really worried, get a $5 volt meter and test the Kensington before you plug it in.

70W should be enough to run your TX so you shouldn't need the 120W. The original Sony adapter is around 64W. Get the 120W if you want to work with bigger laptops.
