I am using the piece of foam that came with the laptop to protect the screen eventhough I got the microfibre cloth with the laptop.

Ok - just had my screen replaced under warranty when the screen decided to show completely dead pixels (ie black) on 3 or 4 different places at once, as I was starting another long, live encoding.

So basically, the PWM (aka the diagonal lines) were NOT there for the first 5 minutes or so, then appeared. Brightness wise, I use my Z on max settings. Turn the brightness down to 50% or less, and those lines are not visible as with my older screen.

The problem now. There is quite a decent 'bleed' on the new screen, most notably from the top and some (though not as much) from bottom. Can anyone whose replaced their screens comment?

PLUS, I want to get a proper screen protector for it now (so the piece of cloth won't be the only thing protecting the screen). Does anyone know any internet retailers who ship to overseas? Most notably something cheap yet reputable. I've been looking at the privacy screen VGP-FL14 on amazon.com, but they don't ship it overseas... Ebay turns up iffy looking stuff shipped out from China, so looking for some user's review / experience here...

    Thanks in advance

You better read the S series owners thread then. You might be disappointed with the screen of the S series.

That foam is a bit sticky and may leave marks on the screen too (from personal experience). I'd recommend using cloth.

Looks like Sony is reselling those damaged screens back on eBay :
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/13-1-LCD-LED-...Computing_LaptopAccess_RL?hash=item5ad71438bb

"This screen is USED and in good condition, however it has a horizontal scuff mark on the face cuased by the keyboard rubbing in transit ... very common with this model! Also, there are a couple of small pressure marks which can be seen when you angle the screen and look across the face (they have the appearance of darker 'smudges')."

Another note, a new guy joined my team (I'm software developer) and he has got a Z, owned it for nearly a year now, I had a quick look at both the horizontal line caused by the palmrest touching the display and the bruise marks and they were all there!
He just told me he tries his best not to notice it! I bet you would when you've spent that much on a laptop :)

That website, http://getsatisfaction.com/sony/topics/manufacturing_defect_in_sony_vaio_vgn_z_laptop, lists a bunch of people really annoyed with Sony as it's apparently clear now that Sony has fixed the lid/screen problems on the new gen Z.

Oh and I own a S and I was one of the first to mention the poor display quality on this laptop.
First it's a glossy screen, not hugely but nowhere near as comfortable as the Z. Secondly and most importantly, it's got serious issues with poor vertical viewing angles, I measured around 10 degrees at best where all parts in the screen are perfectly readable, beyond that you start getting discoloration or color crushing, especially with the blacks.
At the very least, the S has a pretty solid chassis and I don't think the screen will have the same issues as with the Z. I just wished it didn't have the poor viewing angles and the resolution was just a touch higher, even 1440*something would be much better.

I'm aware that in New Zealand (and guessing everywhere else), Sony takes possesion of the faulty screens if they replace it on your Z. Just never knew that they would go and sell them; they were replaced because they were faulty, and they would go selling those faulty stuff again? (then again, those whose screens are not covered by warranty, say LCD was stepped on, might find these as cheap solutions)

Sony NZ had to go ship in the LCD from Singapore in my case. And the replacement screen has a decent bit of LED bleed (when showing pure black on the screen; showing images or other colours, the extreme contrasting hides this), more than my previous screen, from the top and bottom.
Anyways, just wondering if you or anyone else here have experience with screen protectors? Where would be the cheapest and best way to go about buying one (a place that ships overseas that is...). Been thinking of the VGP-FL14 but that's dependent on the reviews from others here...

    Cheers

did anyone have any luck cleaning up the bruise marks? i picked up a few minor dots over the weekend - i think someone stacked their suitcase on my laptop bag on a flight home. Carriers here now make you pay $25 for a suitcase so everyone just slams their gear in the overhead lockers and "make it fit".

Unfortunately, you can't get rid of the marks without also polishing away the screen coating (in effect making the entire screen "marked").

My workaround is to place a soft leather square between the keyboard and screen.

i take care of my screen very well

but when it came back from repair, there is 1 spot of stain (?!) which can't be removed...

ended up they did something to it to remove it...

and the screen came back with more than 10 bright pixels, and obvious light bleed (?) at the top and bottom of the screen

    >_>

have tried everything i can think of hoping to get it out but with no luck. It's the actual film covering the lcd that is slightly scuffed, the lcd itself is not damaged. fkn annoying to have this happen on a flight after i've carried this laptop around the world for a year and a half. lesson to be had - cheap ppl won't respect other peoples property.

i carry it on hand, and slide it under the seat on flight.
i simply don't trust the fragile screen in luggages, especially being squashed with other people luggages

Same. I never put the laptop in the overhead. Always in a sleeve in my laptop bag under the seat.

Every laptop I've ever had suffers from this including the new Z. Mostly they are grease marks that wipe right off.
