Figured I'd ask one last time before I go back to yell at Sony customer service again ------

The LCD on my SZ340 makes an electronic buzzing sound when not set on max brightness (under either stamina or speed mode). The buzzing sound also occurs when running off of battery power (except when set to speed mode, and at max brightness). The sound is easily detectable in a quiet environment, most readily done by plugging the thing in, and switching back and forth between max brightness and one setting below max brightness.

I've sent this machine into Sony twice to try and get this fixed --- the first time they thought it might be something with my harddrive (?), replaced it, sent it back, sound still there. The second time they replaced the inverter, which is the standard suspect for errant video sounds.

ANYWAY, I'm going to speak with a supervisor again and see what he says --- I don't know if I need a new LCD screen, or what. Some feedback from fellow SZ owners that may or may not have this buzz would be helpful. Thanks!

Oh, for some context, here's a link to some Mac users that have a problem similar to mine ----- I've also read of references to VAIO owners that deal with this problem, but haven't had anyone from NBR confirm this.

    Anyway, the link:

search the page for the word "buzz" to find the relevant entries.

Have you ever noticed, assuming that you have dimmers in your house, that when the dimmer is turned down, thereby reducing power to the end source, it tends to make a very quiet, high pitched sound? But when turned all the way up the sound disappears.

I wonder if the same type of thing could be happening, as it seems to only make sound when it's on anything but full brightness.

Yup, that's basically the problem that I have.

I also just noticed that buzz goes away when I have MSWord open to full screen and have the machine on battery power, stamina mode, max brightness. If I minimize Word, the buzz comes back. Seems like there's a way to fix this problem without replacing any physical parts if something like this causes the buzz to vanish, dontcha think?

Woah, you know --- I didn't read your post as carefully as I should have the first time. The light dimmer switches in houses are a perfect analogy to this.
