It may not be the least expensive , but I am very pleased with the Zalman ZM-NC2000 which I purchased for my FW490. Newegg is selling it for 57.99.

Hi, I am looking into getting a Sony Vaio FW and or a SR. Do you NEED a cooling pad for the FW? Does it get too hot without one? I would like to get a laptop that i don't need one and from what i hear SR doesn't.

So does the FW Need one?

It doesn't get too hot unless you are gaming for long periods of time. That's only reason I want the cooler is for when I'm gaming.

I don't know the difference between the two models. Without the cooler, depending on what you are running the my FW gets warm to the right of the mouse pad. Not hot. But I felt that a laptopp cooler would help, and it does. It was fine for me without the cooler, but its better with it.

    Thanks for the info.
The SR and FW are dam near the same but the SR is a 13.3 inch screen. The only difference i see is the graphics card both ATI but the FW ATI card is obviously better.

I still cannot decide which one to buy next month because both look amazing.

Next month? My motto is never buy a computer until you need it. If you don't need it until next month, don't choose it now.

When the refreshes come out, probably mid-October (according to the Canada Sony Style), your decision might be easier. There may even be some pleasant surprises, based on what's happening on the UK site, for instance (where an LED turned up with the 1600x900 size screen in the current, not even the new, refresh -- very nice size for gaming, too).

So, I'd say, relax for a few weeks, then check the new models and compare. If you're really lucky, you'll then find a good deal on a preconfigured notebook of one or the other in the outgoing series and be very happy buying it!

    Good luck!

I try to check the forums as much as i can to get more and more info on the laptops I'm interested in but i didn't know there was a refresh coming!

So what exactly have you heard? Is there a refresh for both the FW and SR next month? If so that would be awesome!

Almost guaranteed to be a refresh for the FW in late October. First of all, the Canadian Sonystyle site is advertising a 590 that will launch then. Secondly, they typically release refreshes for the FW every 4 months or so and late Oct would be about right. Chances are it will have Win 7 as that's when Win 7 launches too. What we don't know is what else will change besides Win 7.
