I have Z720 and had Z690 before. I went to sony store and played with Z11 with 1080p semi matte screen today. I prefer matte screen and would like to know which model of Sony Z was the last one to sport a matte screen

You mean a fully matte screen? The last one would be anything before the Z11 series. Basically, the models with Nvidia 9300.

None at least not for the last seven years, the VGN-Z used a duraview display which was a hybrid, it was more matte than glossy but it wasn't truly matte.

Before the VGN-Z models was the SZ series and those displays used were semi glossy.

The VGN-S before that also used a glossy display.
To go back further i don't know and it doesn't seem necessary.

Something around 20-25 USD should be reasonable.

So to rephrase my question which was the last Z with duraview display and whether Z1 900p screen is less glossy than Z1 1080p?

    I had a Z570 that was a true matte, with 1366 x 768.
    The 1600 x 900 are glossier, but less glossy than the 1920 x 1080.
The 1600 x 900 I just saw was way glossier than my former model.
All of them are referred to by Sony as "anti-glare" but it is a bit of a stretch,
even though they are all less glossy than what you see for the most part at a Best Buy, etc.

So, any 1366 x 768 will be the "matte" you refer to, and all of them had
    the Duraview.
That said, there was more than one panel used in these earlier Z's.
It has been reported that the Japanese Z's used different panels from
the CTO Z's which were assembled in USA. Not sure on that one.

    Hope this helps.

It's not that I need to avoid glossiness, I am very happy with somewhat glossy Iphone 4 screen. It is my impression though that glossy screens have inherently lower contrast in comparison to duraview screens. I will be happy to be proven wrong.

Hmm.. my perception was the exact opposite. Seems a side-by-side comparison is needed.

Btw. the auto brightness feature in VAIO control center> display tends to stick its nose in where it is not needed. Suggest you disable that when making the comparison.

No, the Z-570 with 1366x768 was not true matte. All of the above are semi-gloss models, with varying amounts of coating.
A true matte is like a Thinkpad. It doesn't take fingerprints, you can't see the shape of reflections, and a piece of plastic won't cling to it.
Take a Z - any Z, and look along the display from the side. Hold a piece of paper up to it. You can read the reflection -- that's not matte at all.

Think of photo paper, if that helps. All the Zs are clearly semi-gloss, not matte. They're not gloss or full gloss like most HPs, though.

You probably right, since extra glossy coating was traditionally regarded as contrast boost for lower quality screens and is probably still the case for high quality screens on Z11-13 that I assume come from the same manufacturer as duraview screens.

I also agree that probably I was not able to replicate my Z720 screen ''look'' on store Z11 with 1080p screen because I did not do side by side comparison. I appreciate opinion on contrast comparison from the people who owned both vgn-z and vpc-z models.

I also found that Z11 1080p screen has lower contrast by specs in comparison to Z11 900p screen. How do I find contrast ratio for vgn-z panel in Z720? I can't figure out where it is on notebookcheck.com

Actually, glossy screens usually have higher/better contrast and colours. They suffer from glare.

Matte screens are less affected by glare and you can't see your own sharp reflection in it, but the contrast and colours are worse.

Keep in mind glass is glossy by default. It doesn't need any coating. To make it matte, you apply an extra layer of matte coating. To keep it glossy, don't do anything. Hence the better image quality.

^Glossy panels have a coating on them to make them glossy. The glossy outer surface is not the glass itself.

I think the screen on the current Z is a fantastic blend of both. I don't want glass like a MBP, nor do I want an true Matte line the MBP.

The Z is like a soft glossy.
