I have read many times that you can improve SSD performance by leaving the computer in BIOS mode overnight so it does efficient Garbage Collection on the SSDs. My concern is that the screen stays at full brightness when in BIOS mode. Any way to turn off the screen in this mode or, better yet, dim it way down? Alternatively, is there another way to put the system in a position to maximize garbage collection activity?

    Many thanks.

I've heard to keep your laptop on the Windows log on screen. You don't want anything running in the background for this to work.

The garbage collector works when you're idled in windows, not sure about bios. Just leave it alone with no programs open and you'll see the hd light blink rapidly and fan power up at some point.

Frankly, I've read it so many places I can't even identify any one specifically. I had really come to take it as a piece of "common knowledge," and though I don't have the time right now, if I do a little back-tracking, I can give you some links, and I'm pretty sure some will be back to NBR.

That said, if I've taken that out of context, or you just think it is entirely wrong, would you be so kind as to tell me if there is anything I can do to give GC it's best opportunity to work on my new Z13 (see this thread for more background), the dual 128GB SSDs (ie, 256GB total) of which are benchmarking decidedly on the low side, though certainly not off-the-charts poorly, and in fact not in a way I noticed in setting up and using this never-before-used Z13 I bought to get a "fresh start" on the machine I decided to continue to be my "go-to" model, rather than upgrade ( and downgrade!) to a Z2. Kind of like re-enlisting, but at a new post with only the best and brightest, er, components. ;)

Thank you all for your feedback.
