What exactly is a light leakage? I am using my SZ680 and I'm trying to determine if it has light leakage. If it does, can I send it back to Sony to get it fixed?

Pretty much all cold cathode based LCD's have some leakage, (backlight bleed) its typically only visible on a solid black screen, bottom line, if your screen looks fine to you, dont worry about it, I have seen a few cases of severe leakage, but not many, I dont know about sony, but with Dell its totally luck of the draw, you stand as good a chance of receiving a worse screen as getting a better one.

Mine is signifigantly lighter along the bottom of the screen, the top is noticeable too.
On a black screen or playing a movie fully screen it's not acceptable on a $2000 machine. I have lots of other LCD displays and have to disagree with Iceman that this is normal and should be accepted.
I find it unacceptable and will be returning the machine for a new one. -
^It just depends on how serious it is and if it bothers you. If you can barely notice it, keep it. If you think it's unacceptable, return it.

Hmm...well, I think so far no one seems to really answer the question - 'what is light leakage?'
An example will be great! -
for some examples, see the pictures on the first post of page 10 of the thread : SZ650NC Pics and Review. Notice the bottom part of the screen has some light along the base. You can only notice it (on my computer) when on full brightness, and on a black screen. If I didn't have to see it everytime I turn on my Vaio, it wouldn't bother me at all (I rarely use a black screen)...

my sz680n02 has arrived. checked the light leakage, not sure if there is any. will check it more carefully when I go home. but i guess it is not noticeble during normal use.

If you have to ask if you have it, then its pretty much a non issue, if you had severe leakage, you would know, and you would be dissatisfied and asking what WAS wrong with your laptop, not IF something was wrong with you laptop, chances are you have average or below average leakage, because as stated, all suffer it to a degree, and its usually only really noticeable on a solid black screen, which is a very uncommon working environment.

Sony's have great, bright displays but seem to suffer Leakage more than others.
4 years ago when I was shopping for a Desktop replacement, I was looking at the Sony's at CompUsa and all of the Sony's they had on display had severe Light Leakage. I asked the Salesman if all Sony's have Light Leakage and he didn't even know what I was talking about.
When I pointed out the white light shining out at the bottom of the LCD, he said "Oh, that is normal". I told him "No, it is not normal", especially for a computer that costs as much as Sony charges.
It seems to be an acceptable flaw in the Sony Camp. People in the Dell Camp send their computers back left and right. And they keep sending them back until they get one with no or little leakage.
If this TZ170 were my main computer, I would have sent it back. But since it is just my Travel computer, I'll keep it and learn to live with it. The display is, after all, nice and bright.
What is interesting is Why do Laptops have this problem? My LCD TV's don't, neither do my 21 inch LCD Monitors. -

Size, take your notebook screen, your TV, and a desktop LCD, and turn them so your looking at them sideways, a side by side comparison shows that notebook screens are extremely thin compared to the other common LCD types as thin is in for notebooks so they make the screen as thin as possible, main drawback aside from fragility is increased light leakage, the cathode(fluorescent light) is smushed up into the matrix creating the bleed, for TV's and desktops, there is much more room in the housing to properly seat the light, the new LED lit LCD screens are much less prone to this, as they are much smaller, and can more evenly light the screen.
Light leakage?
