Hi,
Im new here and hoping that someone can help me. In the past I have owned Sony Vaio desktops and Im now looking at a Vaio laptop. I am currently looking at the VGN-NS235J/P. It can be found on the Sony site
as well as Amazon (pre-order only). (Sorry, not sure if I can post links here.)My question is regarding the processor. If I look at the Sony site it shows a thumbnail of the processor being a Centrino 2, but if I look at Amazon it shows it being a Pentium Dual-Core. It has been about five years since I bought a new computer so I am trying to figure out the details. From what Ive read on the Intel site the Centrino is a much newer as well as bigger/better/faster processor. I am a PhotoShop junkie and need speed. I am VERY confused on why the two sites show something different. Any ideas?
Thanks, Lisa M.

Centrino is a marketing platform that includes the intel chipsets, the intel wireless interface, and intel's pentium core processor. A laptop has to use all three to be called Centrino (or Centrino 2).
Since its the same model, I am sure they both have the same core processor. More than likely, they both have intel chipsets as well. So now, if you can look at what wireless card they have, then you'll know if its Centrino 2, or if its just Pentium Dual-Core (if even one of those three elements are not by Intel, then it cannot be given the Centrino designation). -
Great, thanks.
What I see on the Sony site is: Wireless LAN Atheros 802.11 b/g/n wireless network cnx.
So can I assume that is not a true Centrino 2?
Sorry, the processors are confusing to me. So is the core processsor that controls the speed of the computer like when I'm in something like PhotoShop? Intel shows this in their "smarter" catagory that is not their fastest by any means.
Thanks! -
Do you really care if your laptop is using all intel products? If its by Atheros, then you'd be right in saying its not Centrino.
There are some NS models on Sony website that uses Intel wireless, and some uses Atheros. Although it seems Sony is saying they're all "Centrino 2 inside". Its a mislabel.
Without getting too technical, your core processor is like the "brain" of your laptop (pardon the cliche explanation). the core processor (or CPU) is one of the primary factors in determining speed. However, there are other factors as well such as how fast information moves between your CPU, your hard drive, and your memory (cache/RAM/etc.), and how fast these various devices that the CPU talks to operates (your graphics processor, etc.).
I havent' used photoshop in a long time, and I have no idea how demanding the new versions are on resources. Perhaps somebody else can answer that for you. It will definitely meet the on-the-box requirements, but how smoothly it will run, not sure. -
I don't care at all what brand the products are. All I care about is quality and speed. You have been a great help, thank you!!!
