I'm currently using SZ-483N and the optical drive (Mat.s.h.i.t.a UJ-852S) can't be seen in my computer anymore. I tried un-installing and then re-installing the drive but it says: Driver installation failed.

    Help?

Did you try uninstalling the IDE drivers?

Aren't IDE drivers meant to be for HDD?

The optical drive also uses the IDE interface.

Look under the IDE ATA/ATAPI devices for the channel which has a UDMA-2 (or possibly PIO) transfer rate and uninstall that channel. Then either go to the top of Device Manager and select the detect new hardware option or reboot the computer. Windows will then reinstall that channel plus the connected device.

I've never seen that problem before.

Try running the latest Intel Inf update which will make sure your chipset drivers are up-to-date.

If that doesn't fix it then I wonder if there is a problem with the optical drive.

You shouldn't have to install or reinstall drivers for the optical drive. The solution given by dragOn above is mostly likely the answer. I have to do the same thing whenever I uninstall software that uses the optical drive -- including the preloaded stuff from Sony. Delete the two registry keys as decsribed in the Microsoft piece and you'll be okay. (I find that I have to reinstall iTunes after doing this.)
