    I have the standard 1gig installed: 2 512mb from sony(DDR2 533).
I want to buy 1 stick of 1gig(DDR2 533) and then use one of the 512mb giving me 1.5 ram, but will this defeat the purpose of dual channel since the 2 stick don't match ?

You will not be able to run in dual channel. I am not sure which is better to run. I have 1GB of DDR2 533 in my lappy, and it runs just fine (not dual channel).

Why do you need 1.5 gb of ram in the first place??

    Hello All,
I have the same question posted on an earlier thread that nobody responded to so I will once again ask the question.

Is it better to have 1.5G at single data rate (mismatched sticks) or 1G at DDR(matched sticks)???

I have asked this question on several forums and within my entire geek network and nobody has given me a straight answer so I must assume that nobody knows the answer.

Guess I am just going to have to buy my rig and trade out memory and run some benchmarks…

    Bummer 

As for Buzzsaw’s comment, allot of people actually use their computers for more that just surfing the net and watching DVD’S.

    Download this program DVD Decrypter.
Now Plug your laptop into a second monitor,
Ok, Now Open up three of four web browsing windows, you can tab them if you want 
Now run some kinda MP3 player, I like the old version of Winamp because it uses almost no memory but everyone seems to LOVE itunes so go ahead and download that and open up some songs…

Still with me, now put a DVD into your drive and open up DVD decrypter and Rip to your hard drive.

Now, you also have a portable hard drive plugged into a USB port so Set up a 4 gig file transfer.

Did I forget to mention that you are a running windows Vista which uses more system resources already so you only have half of your 1 gig available for system memory.

Now, Ops sorry you system just crashed due to lack of allocated memory To Bad 

Hey even if you don’t “Need” 1.5 Gigs of RAM some of us are just Geeks that like to max out our systems no matter what the case because this stuff is fun for us.

Sorry don’t mean to rant but everytime somebody on this thread asks about memory questions somebody brings up the “Why do you need all of that memory” retort.

Maybe we don’t absolutely need it, but allot of us absolutely WANT it ;)

    Regards,
    Fandarel
