can i directly insert memory stick duo (with out the adapter) into my S48GP (similar to s460 ) ?

Pretty sure the answer is no. The slot is for regular MS size.

You know, I was going to post the same answer Skyshade did. But he beat me to it...
But I had my Sony PSP near by, so I decided to take out the 1gb memory stick duo from it and see if it fit in my s460. And amazingly, it did! And the s460 reads it fine! -
Did you do that without the adapter(ms duo to ms)?

One other point to make about memory sticks plugging into the s460.
I tried both a regular memory stick, and a memory stick duo. Both can be read fine by the s460. The duo fits flush with the notebook case when you plug it in. So, you'd expect the regular memory stick, which is about twice as long, will stick out from the case, right?
But no, the regular memory stick plugs all the way in too, and is flush with the case. So through some clever design trick, the memory stick slot on the s460 has guides on it which direct a regular memory stick to one connector inside, and a duo to another connector.
In both cases, the memory stick is removed by pressing it in a bit, and a spring loaded latch releases it. -
So they actually included a slot which takes both. Nice.
Anyway regarding normal MS, I believe the new Vaio's coming up might not take it at all. -
My S460, PSP, and I thank you.
