    Hi all!

So, I have this three year old Sony VGN-SZ120P that has been working splendidly since I got it. Suddenly one night a week or so ago it just freezes and refuses to boot up again. The power and battery lights turn on and the HD light flashes once but the screen remains black. No POST, nothing.

I didn't have time to diagnose further at the time, but tonight I thought I would have a crack at it. So, I open the memory lid and remove the so-dimm units and open the lid covering the processor and fan and clean out some dust. I then remount one of the memory sticks and try to boot. It works! Thinking that was it I remount the second memory stick as well. The system is as dead as previously.

Thinking the memory stick might be broken, I replace both of them with two 2GB sticks left over from the upgrade of another machine. Still dead. Removing one of the new sticks everything works fine again.

So, it seems like one of the so-dimm slots is broken. Has this happened to anyone here before? Any ideas of how to fix it (save for replacing the MB of course :) )?

Any and all ideas are welcome.

    Best regards,

    Portman
