I will receive my vaio S170 in a week, and i ordered it with 1 X 512MB so as to be able to upgrade it to 1GB. The memory upgrade in sonystyle is too expensive (399.00) so somebody told me to try crucial.com. I didnt find the VGN-S170 model in their model search so i contacted them and they told me that the memory module that fits my S170 is CT6464X335 and it costs 101.99. The price difference makes me worried that this could be a wrong memory module. Could any body confirm if this will work on the S170 or not?

I don't think you need to be worried. The A series is listed and uses the same kind of memory PC2700 (333MHz) as far as I know. I ordered 512MB from crucial.com and it works fine on my A170, and the price is great! Crucial was a little slow to list the A series after its release as well.

S Series uses MicroDIMM memory (172 pin) instead of the regular 200 pin SODIMM. According to NotebookForum.com, the cheapest one (no brand) around is about $135-$140. If you could call Cruicial and confirm that's the right memory and the right price, that would be a great news for all the current and potential S150/170 user.

The 'A' series and 'S' series are two different machines, don't confuse the two. The S series uses 172pin MicroDIMMs.

nice how this forum is labled s170 upgrade and turned into a A170 upgrade, gj guys. Now i just purchaced a S170 and its $600 to upgrade to 1 GB so im thinking about buying my ram seperatly. I saw a 512 stick for $165 on Kingston made for the S170. A rep told me the S170 used 172 pin PC2700 DDR MircoDimm. Does anyone know where I can find compataible modules for cheaper?

    TIA

shop.kingston.com just received the 512MB RAM upgrades today...$165 I believe. Mine's on its way. It's specifically the option given when you select the S150/S170 from Kingston's list.

    Also try memory.com

well i found a website the crucial memory u were talking about.

    http://www.search4hardware.com/15/p_15_189_Crucial_CT6464X335.html

apparently, it says it has 200 pins , not the 172

nice guide, seen it but its really not too helpful in the fact that there is no new information, although its a nice "collection" of information. The memory.com is new to me but as i could also not find any reviews or find it on BBB i was lil skeptical. Also the last post says the person got bad ram from memory.com. I found some on my own. heres my 2 cents.

U6464C250: Kingston part number for 512 mb ram compatible with s170. $165.00
now when you go to buy this ram, it gives u a selection of places to purchace. The cheapest being $135.00 at pcupgrades.com. The cheapest shippin comes out to $14.00 and doesnt look like a reputable site. The next selection was Computers4sure.com which is part of office depot and pretty reputable. There price is $140.95 for a 512 stick with 41 in stock and FREE SHIPPING. This comes out to the cheapest net total. I would rather pay $2 more then memory.com and get a reputable brand and store. They have a 30 day money back gurentee, you pay for shipping, no restocking fee incase it doesnt work. I bought 2 sticks of 512 today, let you know if it works in me new s170. WHOOOOOO!!!

for plp who dont wanna read all that heres the link for the cheapest s170 compatiable memory.
    http://www.computers4sure.com/product.asp?productid=1893931
    512 mb $140.95 + Free Shipping
Now there is only 30 instock, so someone must be reading my posts, reply if this helps you plz.

Thanks for the info. How did you run across that the Panasonic notebook uses the same ram as the s-series?

umm not sure what you mean. It was just the name that computers4sure gave it, "panasonic" if that is what you mean. The ram itself it the kingston (maybe wit panasonic chips) but i have no clu if it will work for a panasonic notebook, its jsut the ram's "name". wel i got my s170 in the mail today, looks good.
    i got a 1.7 ghz p-m
    9700 64 mb radeon
    80 ig 5400 rpm hd
    xbrite screen, 13'3 in
    dvd/cd-rw combo
    no wireless/no lan

2 posts in a row...sry, well i just like to let u all know that i got my memory today and installed it. WORKS GREAT!!!
what i got is two sticks of 512 mb pc2700 microdimm from computers4sure.com. they cots abot $140.95 each, my total came out to like 281.90, free shipping. they are labled as panasonic on the computer4sure site but they are kingston mfg part number u6464c250.
It took me about 5 tires to get it working, i started to get worried, but i found out its a little hard to get them to slip in right. check out how deep ur original installed memory is and make sure ur upgrade slips in just the same else they contacts wont work. they should slide in VERYYYYY easily. If they dont then take them out any try to slip em in again. I figured it helps if u slip them in at an angle then push them down.
HURRAY 1.00 GB of ram for HALF the price of sonystyle.

O yeh almost forgot, anyone wanna buy a 256 mb microdimm from my s170, its offical sony pcb.
    START UR BIDING!!!
