I own a Vaio SZ140 Core Duo T2500 and am completely aware that my laptop will be out-of-date upon Intel's release of their new Merom chips. However, I've read a couple places that Merom will be "drop-in compatible" with Yonah. What does drop-in compatible mean? And if it means what I think it means, can I actually purchase the Merom chip and replace my Yonah with it?! (this would make me uber-excited if so :D Thanks!

Hate to break the news to ya, but computers are like cars; they're obsolete and depreciating as soon as they're off the lot. Sad, but true. Ok, the obsolete thing is a bit far stretching...

From what I've read, the Merom is pin-compatible and will drop in. That'd be pretty darned cool if so. This core duo is already a screamer as is.

    Isn't the SZ140 T2400 core duo based?

Merom is followed Core * naming schema, it should be pin compatible as they just released this pin factor anyways...

So, let me get this straight: Upon release of Merom one can replace their core duo 32bit Yonah with a core duo 64bit Merom???

And what does "pin compatible" mean again?

How does one go about finding out if they have a Calistoga based notebook or a Centrino? Also, no where in that link is Centrino mentioned, how can you be certain it won't work on Centrinos?

No offense, but this have been posted numerous times already. People, there's such a thing as the search option.

Sigh, anyway, to answer your question, yes, they're pin-compatible. However, having said that, BIOS compatibility is another question. The chances of notebook manufacturers releasing a new BIOS to the general public that'll support Merom is rather slim.

He told me. Hes an official bencher for intel, as well as the owner of xtremesystems.org, World record bencher.

So he could tell me a merom could power a nuculer sub and i'd believe him.

SZ's are centrino's and so are just every other sony viao.
