Just compared the prices of Sony F11 (with i7-720QM, 6GB RAM, 500GB 5200 rpm HDD, 16.4" FHD screen, Blue-ray writer, 1Gb graphics) available in USA and India.

The same configuration in USA costs $1535 USD and in India its Rs 130,000/- ($2889 USD)

All laptop manufacturers are simply looting the Indian customers be it Dell, HP, Sony, etc .....

Maybe because of the lack of service centers, it's more costly to fulfill warranties?

    Most warranties are regionally specific.

No, I think it has to do with India still being a developing country. While being a HUGE potential market, they can take advantage of people easily by charging pretty much whatever they want.

Sony has fully equipped service centers across the country. But they are simply treat this country consumers like milking cow. Not only Sony, its Dell, HP all. The price difference is approx double. Goto hell Sony/Dell/HP India.

I also wonder what volume they sell there. You buy 1000000 laptops, you'll get them cheaper than if you buy 100000. That kind of scaling has to translate to global planning by these companies as well.

I also wonder about the tax on imports. In my experience when something costs double in one country compared to another, it's usually the result of import taxes. It doesn't make a lot of sense to charge an arbitrarily higher price, unless all the laptop makers that sell laptops in India got together and colluded on the higher pricing.

I have observed that laptops are more expensive in asia regardless of the country (I'm talking about laptops which are imported and distributed through official importers/distributors). Even price in japan is more expensive than in the US

Everywhere is more expensive than the US, though - it's more like the US is the anomoly for being cheap than the rest of the world being expensive.

How could that be? Most if not all tech support and IT jobs have gone to India. If anything, it should be cheaper since all the labors required are right there in the country.

BTW: is there a huge price difference between China and USA?

even the vaio CW with i5 520,nvidia gt 330,4gb ram,500gb hard disk costs $1200 in india whereas in us its available for $900. but the F series is too expensive, even HP prices are higher, only dell(studio series) is priced equal to us prices.

I think prices in Asia is similar, like someone has said, the price in the US is the cheapest. You can get cheaper price if you get the laptop from private importers. Although usually authorized Sony service center in your country won't honor the warranty and usually jack up the price of repairs when its out of warranty. You have to go to independent service center if your computer is broken.
