If I buy a S580 with 1x256MB memory. Can I then add a generic 1x1GB memory? Will the two work together? Or do I have to toss the 256?

    Thanks.

Yes you can mix memory but they will not run in dual channel.

How can I make sure that my new memory will run in dual channel? Do they just have to have the same size and speed or does other stuff count aswell?

I got one standard 512MB sony memory in my S580 and would like to upgrade, should I just buy another 512MB PC4200 memory and use the memoryslot under my computer to get them to run in dualmode or do I also have to put the memorys at the same slots? (under the keyboard instead of under the computer..)

    thanks all

To run dual channel, two memory need to be identical. However, you don't really see the performance difference of dual channel unless you are really pushing the machine -- heavy gaming or number crunching.

The important thing is to get more memory.

sorry for asking again, I was just browsing the other thread and where i saw someone posting that the memory "could" be a pc4300. now does anyone know for sure if its pc4200 or pc4300?

    thanks again!
