Now that it passed the excitement of the new models of Sony (FW,SR,BZ,Z) we can discuss about the upcoming models with the Centrino 2 ULV. When are we going to have the first details about the Montevina based ultraportables (G,TZ,UX)?
Even if I am really tempted by the Z series I just want to wait for the refreshment or new TZ. Any thoughts about the specs of this Montevina TZ? If Sony puts HDMI and blacklit keyboard...I'm sold! :)

Nixon said TZ will be updated during the fall/winter refreshes.
When this exactly is I don't know.

Specifications should be easy to find out, just look at Intel's roadmap for the ULV platform.

Aren't the Z-series laptops ultraportables with the Montevina processors?

    Helpful link below.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_future_Intel_Core_2_microprocessors

    ----------------------------------------------------------

The Montevina SFF (small form factor) processors will not be released until September at the earliest, so that is the earliest you can expect announcements of ultraportables. :)

The ULV (ultralow voltage) ones are the Core 2 Duo 1.4ghz SU9400, 1.2ghz SU9300 and 1.2gz Core Solo U3300.

I'm interested in the upcoming medium voltage SP9400 and SP9300 with 2.26ghz and 2.4ghz clock speed, 1066 FSB and 6mb L2 cache, they are very similar in specs to the current full voltage Montevina processors but are small form factor instead. Then I wonder what notebooks these will find themselves into, maybe an even slimmer Vaio Z?

The low voltage 1.6ghz SL9300 and 1.86ghz SL9400 we should see in notebooks like the Macbook Air.

Some call them ultraportables but we're talking about notebooks with 12" or smaller display.

hmm, interesting info on the ULVs, perhaps apple is waiting for them in order to release a new mac air with the new cpus along with montevina for their regular macbooks.

The chips he is talking about, are the upcoming 22x22 mm SFF (small form factor) variety, which are much smaller than the current 35x35 mm packaging. It will be very interesting to see what Sony can come up with around that. More chip info. here: http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=3356

thanks for the article, didn't know smaller sized chips were coming.

The SP9400 at 2.4 ghz seems to be a nice treat, wonder what price it will have.

Thanks for this info rahul and lithium.

I hope Sony can put this Core 2 Duo SP9400 that runs at 2.40GHz but ships in a smaller 22mm x 22mm package....Immagine a TZ with this!
Any speculation about the specs of the TZ? Do you guys think is ging to be just a refresh or a hole new T series?

My guess is completely new designs like the Z replaced the SZ. I think all their current models will be replaced by new ones by year's end. Whatever TZ replacement they have, I can't wait!

I decided to wait untill I see the ultraportables what they have to offer and after I will pull the trigger on one Sony laptop. Or a Montevina ultraportable (TZ or G) or if I will not like the specs I will take the Z series.

My guess is that sony will launch a new 12.1 unit with the SL and SP processor.
Sony is really missing out on this market. Although the G series is out there and ti is an amazing piece of work its market share is tiny compared to its potential. I hope sony will make the next generation 12.1 a little more available and a little cheaper than the G...
The TZ will be available only with the SU processor in my opinion so don't raise your hopes there. After all the tz is not about performance, its about battery life and portability (and looks ;-))

Yes, Sony uses Montevina platform in new Z series models since they support DDR3 and use Penryn processors.
