Thanks very much for your reply, I really appreciate that. I don't want to bother you any more, but do you have any idea how much they charge for the additional memory and can you put it into the laptop yourself, once again thanks for your reply

For the cost of the memory ;) check Rachel's link - roughly 38 Pounds inlcuidng VAT.

    Generally RAM is user upgradeable.

Unplug laptop from the socket, and remove the battery.

If you then keep the power button pressed for a couple of seconds you'll discharge the mainboard - touch an earthed connection (or a radiator, should be earthed) to getrid on any static and you are prety much good to go :)

Very helpfull advise from Rachel and I have installed 2 gigabyte onto my laptop and it seems to be working faster. The technician in the shop advised me to install windows 7 so that it overrides Vista business.

Can anyone help regarding finding a battery for my Sony reference number Sony Vaio model no. VGNTZ21MN number PCG-4L2M.

I have tried to look online but it doesn’t seem to register with the model number of my laptop. Can anyone can advise if the Vaio TZ models use all the same type of battery and if so what number is it, any idea where is the best place to purchase one for a reasonable price.

Very strange choice of words... "overrides"...

But yes, you would most likely benefit from Windows 7 - however, its not essential.

    By thew way:
Have you burned yourself some recovery discs - it can be done in the Vaio recovery center and is hoghly recommended.
    (You'll need either 2 DVD-R or 1 DL DVD-R)

Rachelb, i'm glad you got your ram sorted out.

This is the spec page for your model on the Sony website.
    http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/specifications/index.aspx?m=VGN-TZ21MN_N&l=en_GB

All batteries for the TZ series should be ok, to my knowledge there was only two, one extended and one standard capacity battery. The standard battery is VGP-BPL11.
Ebay is really the cheapest place. The problem with Ebay and even some stores is that they sell third party batteries which may or may not be acceptable to you. Some third party batteries are ok but it very much a lottery about what you will get. Google the part though and see what prices you get in stores.

Windows 7 is ok, it is not that much different to Vista, it is a little faster. They streamlined it and a few things like Windows Mail and Moviemaker were ommited. You can do a in place 32bit upgrade and most of your drivers should work.
You can speed up Vista though by using the Aeros basic theme. May be give it a go.

Control panel -->personalise--->Windows Colour and appearance--->Open classic apperance properties for more colour options--> select---Vista basic theme.

The thing that would really improve the overall speed of your notebook is investing a couple of hundred pounds on a SSD hard drive.

I agree on the SSD - I should have one in the post :)
The only thing here is - do shop around because prices vary a lot.
In € the average prices for a 160GB second Generation Intel drive are:
    UK 470€ (cheapest)
    Germany 420€ (average)
    Switzerland 330€ (specific shop)

The US is around 330-350€ too - also, make sure you read about SSDs.

Intel ones are amongst the best - I think OCZ and Samsung have got reasonably good names too, but do research on them first.

    I think you'd need a 1,8" drive too.
