I just ordered a Multiflip 15" Vaio with the NVIDIA 735M 2gig Thinking I was going to be able to hook it up to a Samsung S27B970 27" 2569x1440.
Now after reading different forums I'm not so sure. So the OPTIMUS technology is going to switch between the Intel graphics and the NVIDIA at will. Since the intel probably has a limit of 1080p and the HDMI port is probably hooked up to it maybe it wont matter if the port supports a HDMI 1.4 cable. The monitor might still give me errors because I can't get the laptop to use only the NVIDIA card at my will.

HDMI, Optimus, and 2560x1440 - AnandTech Forums
The thing that blows m mind is that Sony support have no clue what their port supports or not. So my only choice then becoms to
a) wait for my $2500 dollar laptop to arrive in december.
then b} run out and buy the $1400 dollar Samsung display and try it out. If I can't connect the laptop to the monitor at 1440 with at least 35 Hz
then c} return both items and buy an Apple thunderbolt system .
Why is this rocket science to the so called tech support people. I'm a 50 year old woman with no official technical education besides having and working with computers for 35 years and still with 1 weeks worth of researching the subject I seem to know more aboutit than the support people.
All I ever wanted was a laptop with blue tooth and 2569x1440 resolution and the Haswell i7 a 15" screen and a weight less than 5 pounds and a battery life longer than 4 hours that I could hook up to a 27" monitor with 1440 resolution..
I don't ever play games .I want to use it for PHOTOSHOP my main thing, and a little HD video editing from my sony DSC-HX50V plus some streaming from netflix and some blue ray movies from say a ps3 or external blu ray player.
I saw the Apple Thunderbolt MC914 being demoed and I have never seen anything more beautiful in all my life. I want that kind of display but the thought of trading 30 plus years of PC knowledge to 0 years of Apple knowledge is not something I really want to do.
Why can't things be simple, beautiful and just work like my new Samsung Galaxy Note 3

First, take a deep breath and relax, technology can be confusing and frustrating, you've to put up with it, or buy apple products that "just works".
Now, it doesn't matter where the HDMI is "hooked up to". With Optimus, the final output is always from the IGPU (i.e. Intel). Any 2013 premium laptop ships with HDMI 1.4a, so of course, the HDMI supports 1440p.
The problem is with the monitor, its hard to find on a specification sheet of a monitor whether the HDMI supports 1440p. Dell cripples the U2713HM, U2711 and limits HDMI to 1080p, but their U2713H supports it. My ASUS PB278Q supports it. For the Samsung one, I just did a little googling, can't find anything particular. What I'd recommend you is to contact Samsung Tech Support, and keep the question simple: "Does it support 1440p over HDMI?". After buying if it doesn't support it, just return and buy the ASUS, its a brilliant monitor. -
Thanks so very much for the tip ! I have confirmed that the Samsung supports it but it has that nasty glass cover so thanks a million for suggesting a monitor that is almost half the price of the Samsung! I had made extensive searches for a 1440 monitor that has HDMI 1.4 but that one didn't come up so now that I know about it and that it has antiglare which I would prefer then I will look into buying that instead
I also spoke with the US Sony tech support again and they were pretty sure I would be able to get 1440 out of the port and that Optimus does not mean that it also has an intel grapics card so I shouldn't have to be that worried. So it really does appear that this laptop will be one of the first out there who will support an 1440 external monitorMaybe my year and half of waiting to purchase will pay off.
Thanks again for the monitor tip and by the way the "just works" comment was regarding my galaxy note 3 phone that is a beautiful piece of hardware -

No worries, glad to help! You'll love the monitor, tons of options to tweak the image too.
I was actually referring to apple's motto, they use the "just works" phrase a lot lol. Yeah note 3 is an amazing piece of hardware, I've the note 2, itching to upgrade, may be next year haha
