just an update....still quiet.
-
After making loud noise for months, the fan just stopped working completely. The service depot seemed to be knowledgeable and told me they had to order an updated version of the part. I waited 2 weeks for it. Meanwhile I was able to use my laptop by placing it over ice packs.
-
You have to contact onsite service in order to get this new fan? I paid someone to check my fan/clean it and the noise is still there (of course), I want that new fan. Anyone know the model of it? Ugh, this sucks balls.
-
Or has anyone received new e-mails from Terry? I e-mailed him and got nothing.
-
Guess I *could* e-mail him again.

Hi everybody,
Ryo is right. I just got my CS215J fan replaced with model A1563411B.
It only took a few days for them to replace my fan. I got my laptop back 3 days ago. The weird noise is no longer there. The whirling sound is not that loud as before but the intermitency still there. I guess that has something to do with software for temp control in the BIOS. They should have set the fan power off at lower temp point than power on.
I am not really happy with it because I work mostly at night, beside the Intel 4500MHD intergrated graphic does not have enough power for Photoshop CS4 openGL feature, and Intel driver support is pure crap.
I am gonna give this one to my wife when they ship the SR390 I just ordered yesterday which was I support to get at Best Buy a month ago but they ran out. So I ended up with the CS215J and some troubles along the way. I guess it OK the way it turned out, cause I got to customized the SR and my wife loves the CS.
Any way, the Sony Customer Service has been great. And that was how they still have this loyal customer. -
If i can find Terry's number, I'll post it. It goes straight to his line.
This new fan is great! -
Hey,
I just bought the Sony VGN-CS215J from Best Buy on Tuesday and I am having a problem with the fan!
I don't get that clicking noise when the fan turns on, the fan just goes on about every 30 seconds (that whirring noise) even when I'm just surfing the internet.
If I send it to Sony through the Sony Style store, do you think they would be able to fix it? From reading through the posts on this website, it sounds like the fan problem was a lot worse last year and Sony can only fix the clicking noise and not the frequency of which the fan goes on/off because that is a software problem. Does anyone know if Sony has released a software fix for this?
Anyone have any recommendations for what I should do? I don't want to return the laptop cuz I love everything else about it.
Please HELP! -
-
I didn't know that the CS215 had CPU Fan Controls. Do you know how I can access them?
Thanks! -
I'm not sure if yours has, mine doesn't. Some has. Go to power options > advance > management tab, and CPU fan setting should be there, if not, then you're out of luck. Some models have it while some don't.
-
Anyone know if the A1563411B fan is for all CS series models?
-
I got BZ 560 and it had this noise sound, I wonder if A1563411B could be replace for BZ series ?
-
Got a brand new CS220J in US and having the same problem. Reported this problem to Sony and Bestbuy and waiting for the response.
Will Keep you updated. Feels so bad after getting a new notebook. []

find a local authorized Sony VAIO repair center in your area...they can perform the warranty service faster then shipping it to Sony...

Update...I had Sony come to my house to replace my fan and NO CHANGE! It's not loud and doesn't make a clicking noise, but it's pretty frequent, about every 30-60 seconds. Oh well, I guess this is just normal and that means the fan is doing it's job to cool the computer and that's a good thing, right?!
-
The fan has run frequently in every Sony laptop I have owned I doubt there is anything "wrong" with your cs. That's just the way it is.
-
Mine is as quiet as a sleeping baby. No whirring sound whatsoever. And not a drop of heat anywhere. So far I am really impressed with this notebook.
-
Seems like no one knows the answer to my question.
-
By now you could've sent it to sony and gotten it fixed by now.
Just bite the bullet and do it - send it to sony. Make sure you contact Tony (the guy who posted a few pages back) and let him know you're having the same issue. They'll take care of it. I don't know the new fan model # since mine still had the same #, but was part of the new batch (I think mine was one of the first to get the new fans he said).
Still quiet I must say! :-D -
And yes, the fan will turn off and on a lot. That's just how it is. -
The fan is temprature controlled. Once the heatsink reaches a certain temprature, the fan will kick in and cool it off. Once it reaches a safe pre-configured temp, it will turn off. That is the reason why the fan goes on and off regularly. It varies on use. If you are just web browsing it will not go on very long. Try watching a movie or playing a game, and see it on for a while. That is the way every laptop is designed. If the heatsink gets extremely hot, the computer will shut off. (unless its defective.) The fan WILL operate normally, It is just the fact that wether or not is the fan making an irregular noise.
-
I've already opened my laptop, thus warranty is gone, not going to spend 500+ on it.
-
Finally they have some in stock, bought myself one, hope to get it around the last week of June since it takes 7-10 days to deliver by standard. Hopefully when it is installed, it'll have no sound and it is quiet as a mouse. HIGH HOPES. A1563411B is the part I ordered, I talked to the representatives as well, A1563411B is *indeed* the replacement part. It is $93.13. Will keep an update, cheers.

Fan came last week, installed it today. So far so good, no whirling sound AT ALL. I am very happy (for now), I have to send the defective fan back to Sony.
-
I just came across your thread and I found it very interesting...
I bought my last November from Best Buy. I live in the UK though.
I noticed the loud and strange noise that the fan makes, but I did not pay attention. As I am writing my PhD thesis, I needed a laptop that is above all reliable. I thought that that was the case with the Vaios. Less than two months ago, my laptop started switching off, which made it impossible to use. When I contacted Sony the technician suggested to format it. And I would do that despite the inconvenience that it would cause to my work, if a friend of mine who is a computer expert had not discovered that it was the fan that had stopped working. He oiled my fan which led the laptop to work for around 3 weeks, but then it started switching off again. After opening the laptop, I'm not sure if I'm still covered by the warrantee. I sent an e-mail to Sony, they told me that the part number I need is A1563411A, but as far as I can see in your forum you are talking about A1563411B. I don't mind having my friend replacing the fan, but I want to be sure that I have the newest part that will solve my problem.
I would be grateful if anyone has any suggestons and advice. Thanks! -
hi all. my vaio cs is 6 months old and has been working well until about the start of the month when i noticed it keeps shutting down unexpectedly without any warning..and it takes me at least 20 startups to get it working properly again. im not sure if its a virus or whether the internal fan is malfunctioning.
my warranty, unfortunately is valid in my home country but im studying in melbourne and theres only 1 pathetic tech support shop so im not sure if i should send it in for repair and i really need my notebook on a daily basis
anyone experience the same problem and has a solution?
i bought a laptop cooling pad but it seems like it's not helping at all. -
My CS320J is a couple of weeks old and started in with the whirring every 30-60 seconds for about 10-15 seconds yesterday. It hadn't been doing this before, and I don't think it's getting that hot. If it is, it wouldn't be shutting down so quickly. My old Dell, which ran much hotter in the first place, never came on this much. This is very annoying. I love everything else about this computer so far. So anyway, it doesn't seem as though they've made much progress with this issue.

I guess it's doing yoga...

Hey everyone!
For the past 4 days, my Sony Vaio VGN-CS110D has been making grinding/lawnmower noises. The laptop itself is only 7 months old. It's been doing it every 5 seconds, and now it's going on for longer sets at a time. I recorded the noises here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9vHLwAbFxU&feature=player_profilepage
I've read through most of this thread, but I'm not sure on how to approach this problem. I've already emailed Sony, and they gave me pointless information... Anyways, they DID give me a list "Sony Service Centres".
What I'm I supposed to do? Should I call Sony first, or should I just go to the service centre to get it fixed immediately? What do I need to do this? Do I need my receipts and all of that jazz?
This is really frustrating because I'm a student, and I can't even bring my laptop anywhere - which is completely pointless!
Anyways, thanks for anyone that can help me!! -
Try cleaning out the vent with compressed air first and see
cheers ... -
I have had my CS110E, which i purchased from Amazon, for about a month now and i have yet to hear any noises coming from the fan. My Vaio has been working flawlessly for me on a daily basis. i hope it continues to do so since everyone here seems to be having problems a little further down the road (after 6 months). I also did some research and the reviews for the CS110E seem to be good. The battery also last for up to 4 hrs. with brightness set to 45% and power set to Vaio Optimized.
-
My cs16 is starting to give out some grinding noise AGAIN, i am going to send to service center in the next couple of days , this will mark as the 4th time i send it in. This time i am going to ask for their sepervisor/manager and want them to give me an explanation, this is madness, how can sony do this to us?
-
hello,
im from germany and yesterday i bougth a brand new Sony Vaio CS31S and i have the exact same problems with the fan as posted here in this very long thread! i am so disappointed and dont know what to do now! i have searched a very long time for a new laptop and this one would have been perfect for me - but this fan noise makes me crazy!
i consider now if i should bring it back to get my money back ore if i should send it in for repair. but im scared that the same thing will happen to me as to the many other people here: that i will have to send it in several times and the problem will not be solved. and when i'll send it in there will be no chance to get the money back...
i really dont get this mess. when you google the problem you finde hundreds of people complaining and the problem exists for years now, especially with the CS series. when will sony do something??? i really dont understand!!!
kind regards, tina -
Update.
I too had the horrible CS fan noise since I bought it in November. I found this thread and decided to wait until people started having luck with Sony repairs until I sent mine in. It developed a horrible grating noise and I finally came back to this thread to see who I needed to contact and what to say to make sure I got the correct repair.
All I had to do was e-mail Terry (who posted a few pages back). Within the day, I was set up for a technician to come replace my fan. Within two days my computer was fixed, and quiet as ever.
If you are having these issues, don't hesitate any longer to have Sony repair your CS. It is quick and it works and you will wonder why you waited so long. Just make sure they set you up with the Cooling Assembly part that ends with "B" (not "A"!). -
hi kairi2,
i couldn't finde "terry" in this thread, can you give me the e-mail adress please?
can terry help me although i'm from germany?
edit: i found it[email protected]
kind regards,
tina -
so no one can fix this.. this kinda just turned me off from the cs series now ... i really wanted one
-
terry didn't answer until now
can someone please give me the exact name of that new cooling assembly part/fan that runs quiet
and does someone know which fan is installed in the sony vaio vgn-CS31S -
A1563411B
GD2 COOLING ASSEMBLY-INT
is the replacement part. -
I bought my CS last week, it had this same fan noise. (Europe, Finland) I just had it picked up and sent it in for repairs, its off to germany. At first customer support said it would take 5-10 days including shipping. and theres nothing they can do to hurry it up. Then in the end of the call the kind woman said she had tagged it as "priority white" (whatever that means) and said that it should take 3-5 days including shipping back and forth. Now thats pretty quick i have to say, unless she was just pulling my leg.
I would expect to get that replacement fan, i will tell you how it went once i get the laptop back. In the end, if fixing this fan issue is as easy as sending it in for a few days everyone should be able to get theirs fixed, thats what guarantee is for. Typical annoying corporate hiding though not to acknowledge the fault openly. -
I just got my laptop back from repairs which took just about 3 days including shipping, no matter how you look at it thats quick. The documentation states that they replaced the fan and the whole cooling system, whatever that means, so i would suppose they switched the old unit out for that newer replacement one. The fan no longer has that chirp noise when speeding up / slowing down. I also received a personal letter, which im sure is standardized anyway, and a complimentary vaio branded micro-fiber cloth.
All in all, the marketing student in me has to say that Sony surely handled this particular situation almost spotlessly, right out of the book. -
Good luck,
Jenna -
anyone find it strange that they didn't do a product recall and just use the replacement fan for later batches as oppose to making customers go through all this trouble?
-
We also bought a cs 115d the pink one last year. the fan noise before was acceptable but early this week we went to sony center here in VA because the fan was too annoying especially at night and in a quiet room. fan on and off while surfing the net. i cant see why the fan is loud when the specs of the laptop is nowhere to a gaming laptop. even came to a point when some of family members even laugh at the laptop, saying we should have bought a vacuum cleaner than a sony laptop. you know what it feels like when someone mocks your gadget.
sony called yesterday and told us that the laptop have been repaired. we will pickup it this weekend and ill come back to this thread for new comments.
i believe they didnt recall all cs laptops to avoid costs in repair and also to prevent customers to staying away from cs. its a nice marketing strategy for sony.
ill never recommend sony again for this price range, stick to lenovo or apple (i cant imagine lenovo making pink laptops). go for sony with their high end models. -
don't let the CS fan issue turn you off of Sony completely... i bought a custom built SR laptop and this thing is amazing. super quiet as well. Sony fixed my CS's fan so quickly and efficiently that i'd have to say my only complaint with Sony is all the bloatware they install on these laptops. goodness.
-
Perhaps sony want to prevent customer to stay out of cs, but they going to turn off all the current cs owners (especially those owners who follow this case closely). I for one, is not going to purchase another vaio again after this incident, i mean, i don't mind paying a little bit more for a product if it offers a decent quality and reliability, but what i got now is a product that gives me nothing but headache.
Currently my fan goes crazy, sometime it gives that annoying grinding noise and sometime it stays quiet, and the funny thing is that one of my usb port suddenly not functioning. What is going to happen next? i dare not imagine anymore...
My 1-day-old Sony Vaio CS laptop has this intermittent whirring noise from the fan when my laptop is on!
