it is quite a joke to see how sony replied to any of these email
edit...
hurray, the noise is coming back ! bravo, sony did it again and they have been ignored my request for months now regarding my laptop replacement. What they replied me was just asking me to wait for their higher authorities' decision, and they take months to pass my message to the so called higher authorities. Fantastic..

Just want to bring this up, today sony finally called me and discuss a bit about my case. According to the guy on the phone, he said that sony had rectified the fan problem and come out with a new type of fan that should solve the problem. How true can that be i don't know, he mentioned that the new type fan should put under my laptop during my last visit (september) but have no idea why my fan will make the same noise again. (although the noise is very soft and need to put my ear near the heat vent to hear it) he will send a technician to my house tomorrow, i see what will happen. Will update you guys tomorrow.
All right, the technician finally leave my house after replaced a new fan for me, i just have a glance on the box it is A1754159A. According to the technician, sony had changed a few vendors for this bloody fan, about this new fan the technician said so far no customer complain about it...let see how it goes -
thank you for the information ryo. the part no will be handy for all cs users. i hope our cs doesn't need another service for its fan. keep us updated.

I have a CS180J and recently it started to make continuous noise (like those old fans with no lubrification), not only the "wiring" noise...
The warranty did not cover this problem because this model is not sold here in Brazil, so I decided to fix it by myself like many other notebooks that people bring to me to fix...
Its very simple to disassembly the CS models, only the bottom part of the notebook is removed to take access to the cooler.
To remove the fan of the cooler you have only to pull it up, there is nothing holding it, only the magnets, after pulling the fan up you will see the axis...
I have cleaned it with toilet paper, removed all old oil trace from there, and after I used only one drop of this oil (for bike):
And the notebook stopped with all the noise of the cooler...
Any questions please ask me. -
Nice post B-EAGLE. It would be great if you can upload some pics.

Hi guys,
My wife and I both have CS26G Laptops that were purchased in Australia. My wife's one has just started with this dreaded fan (vacuum cleaner) noise. It really sounds unhealthy! Mine seems to be fine. The laptops are both only 8 months old so still in warranty.
Problem is... we've just moved to the U.K. Our warranty clearly states that Sony will not service the product whilst it is outside of Australia. I really want to get this fixed incase the fan packs up completely. I'm thinking of taking it to a Vaio Service Centre in London and paying for the new part and service, but I'm pretty pissed about having to do this for a laptop that is less than a year old. Any thoughts?? Anyone in the U.K. had this same problem with a CS and had a successful fix??
p.s. I can't bevlieve this thread has been going for over a year now. Thanks a lot to all those people who continued to post updates and offer advice. -
The only thing WEAK SQUAD said they would do for me is to send the computer off to Timbuktu and I would have to wait 2-3 weeks. Seriously ? What the hell is their purpose then ? I will take it apart myself and take pics. I'll upload them if I am successful. I am having extreme fan noise and I have not but will try the fan management option before I take apart the laptop. Wish me luck

I work for Sony repairs here in europe. Many CS series have defective fans ( we replace around 50 a day). It should be replaced in warranty.
-
My CS was shipped yesterday to the UK where it's going to have the cpu fan replaced

Not sure if anyone else will verify this, but it is working for me.
As I type this on my GF's CS36GJ, the fan has stopped, it was also making the whirring noise before hand. If anyone has documents or anything that they would like to do before their computer is sent away, I suggest the following.
1) Get an old power supply
2) Get a case or CPU fan
3) Connect them up very carefully (Have all power dissconnected)
4) Place the makeshift extraction fan near the fan vent
5) You can now use the computer without frying it, or it reaching shutdown
temp.
Hope someone will verify this and I hope it helps. -
Just saw this post. I have a sony cs 23g. It was brought in new zealand and now I am in germany. The computer is a year old so it has no cover. What is the part number for the fan .. well the new updated model of fan. And where can I buy it?

Hi there! Can you do us a huge favor and by uploading some sort of walkthrough with pictures on how to disassemble a vaio vgn-cs290? I'd like to clean the innards as I can't send my unit overseas for repairs. Thank you! -
Hello All!
My VGN-CS290 was bought in the U.S. and I'm currently in the Philippines. A few months shy before this Vaio turned one year old, I experience sudden shutdowns ...as if the power just went off. Googling and the unit's symptoms convinced me that it was a fan problem as installing CoreTemp revealed that the laptop turns off when it reaches 60 degrees. Surprise, surprise...Sony Philippines was useless, a few hours wasted in that endeavor. Chat support was kind enough to endorse me to their international support. Sony International Support asked me to ship my unit to San Diego so the fan can be replaced for free. That's really nice of Sony, really. Problem is, the shipping cost will probably cost like a netbook and I'm don't like the risk of shipping something this expensive overseas.
Done with my rant. Now, I just need to open this baby up and maybe I can replace the fan myself...would probably cost less than shipping the unit out. Anyone who can help me out here, I thank you so very much! Peace! -
I just might try thisI currently have a deskfan pointed at the vents and the temp is steady at around 40 to 48 degrees. Oh my Vaio...what have you been reduced to

Well a few months ago my laptop ( CS21S R ) finally started to make noises (was an end of the line machine, bought from PC World St.Helens NW England as an ex-demo model that had been powered on in the shop for a loooong time) and now it's becomming rediculously bad (grinding, scraping noises, really LOUD) so, much as it pains me, it's going in to be repaired under warranty.
I have not seen anything on the Sony UK website that mentions any problem with the fan on this or similar laptops.
So I don't think that they will be extending my warranty on the fan to 2 years.
I'll be taking it in shortly to PC World an seeing what they have to say, just got to go and find the receipt first.
I went to Tesco recently and saw a new Sony laptop which was also red the same as this one I have and it wasn't as good as this one so I'd rather keep this one and have it repaired LOL.
Cheers,
Alistair G. -
To that guy on here who mentioned about the CPU being overclocked, I checked on CPU-Z and it's on 1995 MHz when under load with a x10 multiplier, and 1197 MHz when idle with x6 multiplier. So mine is definitely NOT overclocked.
The core temperatures of the 2 CPU cores are 37 and 38 degrees when running a few app's and Firefox (which eats some CPU), but rise only to 53 and 55 degrees Celcius when both cores are under constant 100 per cent load (when using video conversion software etc.), when the ambient temperature outside is 20 Celcius, and I am in a room with no open windows and no air conditioning) (I am in NW England) so the fan is actually quite efficient at extracting the hot air.
Cheers,
Alistair G. -
Just played Sega Rally 3 on my CS21S/R and it's getting to 64 Celcius on the GPU as a maximum and 60 and 61 Celcius on the 2 CPU cores.
No shut downs ever.
Fan is very loud and rattly!
Cheers,
Alistair G. -
I just had a word with Sony UK via their online chat service and they said a courier will be contacting me on Monday 9-5pm and will pick up my laptop and I will have it back in 5 days.
All free.
I am quite impressed.
Looks like Sony do look after their UK customers!
I would buy Sony again based on this (I already just got a PS3 last month anyway LOL).
I'll report back and tell everyone whether the new fan is to my satisfaction.
Cheers,
Alistair G. -
Well I got the laptop back today (fast service!) and they've cleaned it and fixed the fan.
The fan still has the same behaviour as before BUT the sound of the fan is back to normal. NO more scraping and grinding noises. Just wooshing.
The fan sounds lower pitched than before. Maybe I have a redesigned or different model fan in it now.
It came back with a cleaning cloth and a letter and a page saying that all they did for repairs was fix the fan.
I got the same machine back (same serial number, this is a VGN-CS21S / R) and they did not alter my windows installation at all as far as I can tell.
Well I am now a happy bunny and I'll report back if ever the fan starts sounding abnormal.
Cheers,
Alistair G. -
Had a similar problem, called sony and they weren't of much help. After reading up a bit on the issue I see that this is a common problem and in most cases you will need to replace the fan. I found one here for a pretty decent price. They recommended that i also reapply a good thermal compound like arctic silver or similar so that the heat gets transferred away properly. So far all is good , quiet and cooling my laptop down. Hope this helps somewhat.

After a year my VGN-CS16GQ laptop started to show symptoms related to fan issue until one day.. It auto-shutdown a few minutes after it was turned On. AT first I thought the problem was on Windows operating system but later on I concluded it was due to the fan issue since the laptop will auto shutdown even at start up or even inside the cmos setup. It seems the fan is not spinning anymore causing the CPU temp to raise up.
So I send my laptop to SONY service center. They replaced the CPU fan free-of-charge based on the troubleshooting report. I got my laptop after 3 days. So far the laptop is OK but I will still observe after a few days/weeks more if the fan issue will come back. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks to Sony Service Center (Solid Service), their service is fast. Im from the Manila by the way. -
the fan noise problems is an acknowledged problem by sony and sony can replace it under warranty, even if your laptop was not purchased from the country where you intend to have it repaired.
i bought a unit from the us last year and was able to have it repaired under warranty outside of north america.
i called the us sony office first and they wanted me to ship the laptop to the us.
eventually, i tried my luck with my local sony distributor and they repaired it free of charge. -
Hi. I bought this Sony Vaio model VGN-CS11S/P from eBay adn the seller told me about a wiring noise heard from time to time but i couldnt beleieve that is so bad. Now i want to repair it. Do you know if Sony Service would repair for me free even if it is second-hand?? How long did it took yours to fix?
-
Hey, I got the same problem as you! My laptop is Sony as well (CS VGN-CS16G/W) and I bought it about 2 years ago. It never had a problem before, and the annoying whirring sound just came up like few weeks ago. It's been on and off for the whole day today! and it's driving me crazy! Did you manage to solve the problem? and what did you do to it? Thanks.
My 1-day-old Sony Vaio CS laptop has this intermittent whirring noise from the fan when my laptop is on!
