I'm new to the Forums so forgive me as this is not a detailed review, more of a first impression.
Background: I use my Notebook heavily for both work and play. Work is mainly Office applications so power is not the be all and end all. Play includes Video editing, 3D gaming, Music and Web Surfing. I work for a large Cruise Line and spend my life on the open waves therefore I have to carry my life in my backpack, thus the need for portability. I was using a GRT290ZP mainly for work although I do also have a TR1MP for taking ashore and checking mail etc. The GRT made the trip from My Cabin to Work everyday which is 7 flights of stairs (or the Elevator normally) therefore weight is not an issue. I decided, as most of the work I do is spreadsheet based, to take the plunge and invest in a 17" widescreen model.
Choices: I looked at the Toshiba P25 S676 but decided against it as the low screen resolution defeated the object of having a 17" model (being less than my old GRT) and it was somewhat bigger than the Sony although no doubt that P4 3.4g processor would have left the A190 dead in the water. It had to be available over the counter in the usual high street stores as shipping to a ship can be difficult. I chose the Sony A190 as I have had 6 prior Sony Notebooks and only one minor problem with any of them. This is now my 12th Notebook PC and all other manufacturers I have used have had problems on every model within the warranty period.
First Impressions: The Screen is fantastic, I know some people don't like Xbrite technology, but it really pushes my buttons and I work in a bright environment all day long with no problems. The whole unit looks and feels like a quality product. The Keyboard has a good response and has as close to full size keys as you will find on any Notebook. My wife walked in the cabin and instantly filed for divorce as she knew that getting me off this baby was going to be too much of a chore. With it's AV dock and S Master Speakers straggled either side of it, it is a beast with a larger footprint than a lot of desktops.
TV Times: After installing all the usual office software and performing all the updates from Microsoft, Sony & Symantec, I was ready to try out the TV & Video features..... Okay, this is where I have to admit, I think Sony made a mistake. They have installed it with their own "Giga Pocket" & "Vaio Media" software which in my opinion isn't in anywhere near as good as Windows Media equipped PC's. The included remote does not have the functions of the Windows Media Remotes and it is difficult to use, although including the IR receiver in one of the speakers instead of having a "Dongle" was a nice touch. I found the software difficult to configure and the results on the High Resolution screen were disappointing. If this is a major buying point for anyone, make sure you look at Microsoft Windows Media equipped machines.
Work Horse: It was time to take it upstairs and do some work. Immediatley she redeemed herself, having so much space for my Excel spreadsheets on the screen and being able to display two easily readable pages of a Word document side by side makes my life a little easier, once again this fabulous screen gets 10 out of 10.
Play Time: After work I installed my copy of Colin Macrae 4 to see if it lived up to the GRTs P4 power I was amazed that there was almost no difference in performance on this game. The 735 processor handled the game in its stride and although the Radeon 9700 could use an extra 64 meg of RAM to give it a better resolution, I was quite impressed.
Juicing it up: On her first full charge, I managed 2 hours and 7 minutes of work before having to tie her back up to the mains. (Screen on Auto brightness) This is somewhat of a bonus for me as I was getting a mere 55 minutes on my GRT. With a little tinkering, I am sure I could get that to near 3 hours by setting the brightness to its minimum.
Other Notable points: After reading the threads in this Sony forum, it seems some people hate the Fan thing! Yes it runs constantly but under normal operation it is barely audible and I mean barely. I make more noise breathing .. At this moment, my A190 has been powered up for nearly 3 hours and there is a slight amount of heat from the screen lamp and the underside is warm to the touch but certainly not hot. *Tip* Leave the labels on your Palm rests or take your watch off when you are typing as I know this one is going to scratch easily
All in all, I am over the moon with it and despite my disappointment at the TV functions, I would recommend it to anyone.
Please let me know if you find this useful or if you would like to know something specific about this beast of a machine.

ahoy Peanutt, this is definitely useful, thanks for the great overview! I'd love to get my hands on a VAIO A to play with, the large widescreen coupled with XBrite really makes my eyes pop too.
If you're interested in doing a more in depth review, just click on my profile and shoot me an email or respond here. We have rewards to give for any reviews that include pics (not sure if life on the seas allows you to carry a digicam around...but there must be photo opps so I'd assume so!) and an overview of most of a notebooks features....which you're already halfway there with just in this post! -
Thanks Abaxter,
I would be more than happy to do a more indepth review of this machine but my knowledge of benchmark software etc. is non existent. If you could give me some tips on software to use to perform these tests I would be happy to do so. (Sorry i did not email, but I'm currently on some one elses laptop performing update.... (Dell Inspiron 2650... YUCK!))

Andrew,
I have an A197XP and would be very interested in doing a review for NotebookReview.com.
I have emailed, but my mail keeps getting returned, hence why I am posting here.
The content of my mail is below. Please contact me via the mail address in my profile if you are interested in letting me loose on a review!!
I own a Sony Vaio A197XP and have done so for approximately 2 months.
Previously I have owned Acer and Toshiba notebooks and have experience
with notebook technology.
The A197XP is an excellent machine, which has pleased me greatly. There
are, of course, many points both good and bad which are worth discussion
in the light of a review. These issue are such things as the slow HDD,
low memory graphics card and high price for performance.
I have reviewed the A197XP (in parts) for the WhatLaptop forum and
continue to comment and discuss the machine with other users of the
forum. I am currently writing a review of the machine for a intranet
magazine published by my employer for its IT staff.
Outside of notebooks and reviewing I sometimes write pieces for rock
climbing publications, all of which are printed media so far.
Finally, I am also a budding novelist and write as much and as often as
I can.
I have a digital camera - A Kyocera S3 (3.3 MP) and use it frequently in
conjunction with my SLR for my photography projects.

vaioboy: hey, it's odd that the email you tried to send bounced...you were using [email protected]? I'll send you an email regardless.
Peannutt: it's not required that you have to do benchmarks for a review, just a nice added touch, and shorter style reviews with just personal opinions and pictures are better than nothing too. one really easy "benchmark" test to download and run is called Super Pi, it's simply a small program that calculates how long your computer takes to calculate Pi to a chosen number of digits (we use 2 million digits as the benchmark here)

Andrew,
Thanks for the mail, but the address you mailed me from doesn't seem to work either. I get the same non-existent host returned mail.
I've mailed you at the address listed on your personal homepage. I hope this is okay?
AS for benchmarking the system, SiSoft Sandre runs its own benches against pre-listed machines. 3DMark01 is the standard and 3DMark03 is also often used. I've used Sandra and 03 so far and have had pretty average results. Watching the tests in 03, you can see subtle difficulties the 64Mb card has.

Hi Abaxter,
I emailed you last night about the review. I will work on it based on other reviews I have read in the forums.
I would like to give it a week or two to get to know this thing first.... But after 5 days, I still haven't found many things wrong with it apart from the TV software, which now I am getting used to it, is pretty good and the results aren't too bad, especially when viewed on an Aquos LCD TV.
One little thing that is starting to annoy me is the touch pad. I have installed a Microsoft Bluetooth mouse so have lost control of the touch pad and it is way too sensitive when I am typing..... Can anybody give me a clue how to cure this?

I don't know what the difference is between the A190 and the A197 (XP and VP variants) here in the UK, but I am assuming they are the same.
The touchpad on my A197XP is superb - nice and responsive with just the right amount of power needed to tap and double-tap.
My machine came with the Vaio wireless mouse, but this does not interfere with the touchpad.
You can change the sensitivity of the touchpad in the control panel, under the usual pointing devices or mice or something. You can also disable it for typing using the same facility.
Can't say I've heard of many touchpad faults with this machine.

Thx Vaioboy, I have tried uninstalling my Bluetooth intellipoint and then adjusting the sensitivity, then reinstalling the intellipoint and this does not work. Whenever the Bluetooth mouse is connected, it will not let me access the touchpad settings..... A minor blip and I am sure I will find a way of doing it with time....

Peanutt, I never got an email from you, kinda odd, I'm emailing you now so respond if you get that!

I could run whatever benchmark tests you like on my A170. Also let me know what sort of stuff you want to know about in a review and I'll try to write one up.
