After pressing the power button and putting the computer to sleep it powers down normally - i.e. the screen fades to black and after a few seconds the hard drive stops and the fan turns off. However after about 5 minutes and with no user input the computer powers up again.

I have no idea why its doing this! I haven't changed any of the power settings for ages and this is a problem that has only been happening for the last week or so.

The model is a VGN-FZ21Z running Vista Home Premium.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had the same problem with my FZ31z. I preset S button for "stand by" but happen to me quite some times that laptop wakes up on his own. This is related to some background application set to do some tests (in my case it was System Mechanic - ActiveCare scan). you should check if you have some antivirus/defragmenter/registry tool scheduled for some activities.

    Hope this will help you.

    Cheers,
    Miki

Thanks for the help guys, I do have System Mechanic although I thought I had it set up not to scan too much by itself since it was doing it all the time and slowing the system down - not really the point!! I will check its settings and report back. Thinking about it it did recently update so it might have reverted back to the default settings.

I once had Vista set itself to wake up on 3AM for upgrade. Needless to say, I was very scared when I noticed the laptop waking up by itself on 3AM..One of so many reasons why I hate MS...

I have rescheduled system mechanic and in fact ended its processes from the task manager but the laptop still keeps waking up! I can't find anything else that's scheduled to start up at night.. Really strange!

Could it be the vaio update manager?
