I am new to this forum; read a little about bad Sony support on a related forum. My GRZ laptop started overheating after about 6 months. Sent it in, they gave me a new motherboard and cleaned the fan. It worked better for another 6 months. Started overheating again. I was careful not to run it too hot or too hard. It's been manageable, and I was about to get the fan cleaned, when it just completely went blank - doen't even try to get hot anymore; just won't boot or so it seems. Of course past warrenty. Last time I sent it in they wiped my hard drive. I cannot send it in now becuase I can't lose that data. Most is backed up, but the latest is the most valuable. I did get it to powerup again the next cool morning for about 2 minutes; then the next morning for aobut 30 seconds. Less time each time. Worst $1600 I ever spent and I won't ever buy another Sony - ANYTHING.

Would that happen to be a GRZ630? I used to have one of those. I was forced to sell it for $650 because it was overheating on me all the time and was worthless for anything but surfing the net. It had a stick of ram die in it too after the warranty expired.

PCG-GRZ660 - close enough. I've seen dozens of posts of similar problem for over a year. It's too bad that Sony doesn't fess up and fix them. I usually destroy my laptops before they destroy me. My old Compaq lasted 5 years.

Can you suggest a rugged replacement?

Ah, you had the one above mine. If I were you I'd look towards another HP/Compaq. The new Centrino Sony's are nice but they cost a lot more than what you'd get with HP/Compaq. After my experiences with Dell I would not recommend them (especially since I'm on the verge of sending this XPS2 back if they don't fix the screen this week and will buy a ZD8000 from HP if I have to return this).

Btw - have you tried spraying a little compressed air into your GRZ660? You know, those little bottles you buy from Staples and spray onto computer parts to clean the dust out. That did temporarily enable my GRZ630 to keep itself cool during huge file transfers or unrealEd work if you sprayed the main fan in the back right of the machine.

If the system is still meeting your needs you should try that. It'll help it out in my experience.

ya ive had a sony desktop computer and all it does is overheat and crash every 15 minutes. That pretty much ruined all faith i had in the company for thier products. Every single sony product ive had has either crapped out within 1 or 2 years or just malfunctions. Every cd player ive had of thiers (even the 300 dollar super thin japanese model) has died on me. They dont make very high quality stuff IME.
They make GOOD stuff and groundbreaking stuff, but its not very reliable.
