I have no idea why, I can just leave it doing nothing, with just MSN and ICQ and Firefox running, and it doesn't even last more than an hour.

I have had my SZ for about 10-12 months now.

    What can I do?

Your battery should at least last 2 years of average use before a signigficant drop in life -- my guess is you got a lemon. Call Sony.

Ur computer is much older so it requires much more power. My 12 year old desktop motherboard blew up. Just before that...there was a power outage in the house. But 10 months aint really old. So yea i bet its a defect.

Have you calibrated your battery at all in the last year? That may be part of the problem.

Read through the battery guide for more information on the subject. You may also want to contact Sony support as that seems to be too much degradation for one year's usage--but Li-Ion batteries are only expected to last 1-3 years. It's possible you just got one on the low end of that spectrum.
