I have my Sony SA in "stamina" mode and it sounds like a jet plane taking off.

ALSO, when I close the lid the unit doesn't seem to go to sleep. It stays burning hot in my bag.

Any help available? Do I need to ship it back?

What are you running on your laptop? The only reason the laptop would have the fan running high would be you're running something CPU heavy or playing games.

As for the lid: make sure in your advanced power options you have it set up that if you close the lid, the laptop actually goes to sleep. It is probably just turning off the screen.

Did you get rid of the more useless of the Sony apps? A few of them (IDR which, but something to do with the PMB) are always causing the CPU to ramp up, causing the heat buildup.

Right now, my clean install SC is resting on my matress in Stamina mode, and has been for the last 20min. Fan hasn't turned on once, and it's barely warm near the black part on the bottom, between the hinges (only been web browsing NBR forums so far).

this is the default factory option. I'm sure the OP modified something and is now complaining. :)

well, in theory, it could be a bakcground app messing with the standby option :p

Then again, I have a lot of unproven theories, :p

I have a Z1 and sometimes my laptop doesn't go into sleep mode when the lid is closed (I set it to sleep in the power options). Can't really figure out why this is happening but it only happens once in a month or so.

But what exactly is the OP doing with his laptop? I mean, I know the SB will sound like a washing machine when you game but under normal circumstances it shouldn't.

1st OP, run HWMonitor to see what temps you're getting.
2nd, press ctrl+shift+esc to open task manager and sort by CPU usage to see what's using so much CPU power

could be your antivirus just running a scan...

Thanks for the tips. On the lid issue, I think it's when I joined my domain the power settings got wiped out. The previous default of "sleep" was now nothing. Bizarre. One down. I still can't get the DVD drive to shut off, but hopefully I can swap that for a second hard drive anyway.

On the jet engine, it's with normal usage - web, outlook, etc. I don't game and the hardest core thing I do is some PowerPoint, Excel and 20 open tabs. That takes memory, but no processor time. Can't figure it out at all.

I will wipe out some of the Sony apps to see what they do, but we'll see.

Wipe down/out the BPM or whatever the three letter sony program is named and it's related items first. That should stop the background CPU usage, and allow the laptop to run much cooler and less noisey for normal useage. :)

When my SA is just sitting there in stamina mode, something causes the CPU to start going about 40% or so and the fan starts running loudish. I try to figure out what program is doing this but every time I open process explorer, whatever is causing the jump in usage instantly stops and I don't see anything using an abnormal amount of the CPU. It's a little creepy.

You'll know the laptop is in standby/sleep when the green light on the power button and the top right side of the laptop changes to a pulsing orange color =D

Those are tasks running in the background whenever the laptop is idle. Open up Task Scheduler and look through all your tasks for any that run when the laptop is idle and change them. For me, it was disk defragment and a few others.

Thanks, I think it might have been MS anti malware since that was scheduled to activate on idle.

I guess we'll find out if the fan starts up like a 737.

Mine is still going nuts... Sometimes seems like the green light stays on even when closed. It's not a 100% standby.

Alright the machine is now sleeping more often, although there have been one or two misses where it doesn't always fall asleep.

Still sounds like a jetplane when I switch over to speed mode. :(
