    Hello NBR Readers

Something very unexpected broke today. I'm not sure but I think my SZ360 speakers die on me. The headphone jack still work but nothing is coming out of the speakers above my keyboard.

    I try the following

    1. Mute and Unmute
    2. Went to device manager, uninstall driver, restart, installer driver and restart
    3. Went to every sound setting possible and play with it

My headphone jack is working fine but speaker is not. Any ideas why this is happen? My speakers die?

I also went to BIOS setting and allow turn the VAIO boot logo volume to level 8 but no sound at all. My headphone on the other hand have the VAIO boot sound.

Speakers is the last thing I expect to die on any laptop. Is there any other way I can accurately diagnose this problem? I want to make sure its my speakers before I search for replacement.

    Thanks

    Ch28Kid

It's strange how both speakers died at the same time. You may want to take it to the service centre for them to have a look. You have done all that you can in terms of reinstalling the sound drivers.

Did you hear anything in particular just before both speakers stopped working? Ie. any warning signs?

The speakers themselves are almost certainly fine. More likely it's a wire coming loose, or the amplifier speaker amp having burnt out. Yes, repair is the way to go.

The headphone jack and speakers are driven from the same amp, so the amp is not the issue. This is actually a "software" issue, bear with me a second.

It used to be that on all laptops the output of the amp was routed to the headphone jack. This jack incorporated two small switches that redirected the sound to the speakers. If a headphone was plugged in these switches opened, thus muting the speakers.

That's how it USED to be. Now the switching is all handled in software. Plugging in a headphone now alerts the software and it then turns off the flow to the speakers. Hence my suggestion that this is a software problem. There have been a few other threads here about this issue on various models. The OP should use the search box at the top of the page and search for one or more of the following terms: headphone, speaker, mute.

I know one was was to revert the machine back to it's out of the box state. But that is pretty drastic. I believe there were other fixes as well, though.

If this is a Vista machine, the OP might want to consider a system restore back to a point in time when the speakers were known to be functional.

Ok weird... I fixed the problem in the WEIRDEST way.

So basically I took my headphone and plug in half way in. Just enough for the software to differentiate between allocating sound to speaker or headphones. At first my headphone was only playing in the left channel. I play with it a bit more and my speaker started working.

I can't believe it... but thanks for the post Gary! +1 for you!
