My friend dropped a window on my laptop by accident.

Right, so long story short my friends got drunk while i was out of town and one of them climbed on the roof and wanted inside so he tried to open my window, which promptly fell out of its frame and crushed my brand new VAIO VGN-SZ450N laptop. Not such a good welcome home. Yeah.

He is a very good friend of mine and I do not wish to cripple him financially - even though he obviously deserves to be. He has agreed to pay me whatever it costs to fix OR replace (at my discretion).

I am typing on my "crushed" SZ450N right now. Superficially, it appears as if the damage is isolated to the screen - giant black characteristic cracks litter the once beautiful 13.3" display. However, after booting to Vista I noticed that things are loading somewhat awkwardly, and some other things are acting more finicky than usually (wireless cut out a couple times). This leads me to believe that the hard drive may be damaged as well. I have not checked it for errors yet, that is on my to do list. I was wanting to upgrade to a 7200rpm hard drive anyway.

I did not get a warranty with this computer. As far as I know our insurance will not cover this either. I'm fairly confident that this computer is salvageable, so the first step towards resolution is to get the screen replaced. I would also like to get the screen "shell" replaced as it's all scratched up. But, this is aesthetic and I can live without it if it's too expensive.

I was wondering if anybody else has experienced anything remotely similar to this. And if so, it would be great if they could offer some advice. For me, eBay was the first place I looked for a new screen, and there are several models up by Sony that say they fit VGN-S series notebooks. I would like to have the same screen but I'm not sure what I have, and what the differences are when it comes to these different models.

    Thanks

Ouch, not good. Sorry to hear that.

Call sony, send it in and take the beating you'll be subjected to.

Might be cheaper to find another sz4xx on fleabay now that Sony has discontinued them.

The antenna for the Wireless usually goes behind the LCD screen. So if the Window has damaged your screen, it might also have done damage to the antenna.
Hopefully nothing horrible has happened to the internal parts.

Did you buy it on a a credit card? Most credit cards cover accidents like these.

Because it was physical damage all bets are off as to what it will cost. You do want Sony to fix this though. Other than checking with your credit card company, check with the Sony Extended Warranty dept (18663740134) to see if they would still be willing to sell you an accidental damage policy. You might be surprised!

Do you really think they would sell me one after it's already been broken?

also, I'm trying to look into checking this out with my credit card company, but so far no luck, any tips?

sell the broken one on ebay and then make the friend pay the difference for a new SZ. Whether you decide to get a SZ6 or SZ4 is up to you :). In all fairness, maybe you should get the SZ6 to prevent furthur financial crippling.
