hmm a dock you say? a la Z series? with the usb 3.0 connection and power in one? I could see myself getting a new SE if it comes with full HD screen, no optical drive (would be on the dock) and a nice thin profile to replace my FW.

what is very soon? :p summer?

The SE already have a dock connector, thin profile and a full HD screen... Unlike the SA it has a Synaptics touchpad too.

But it has the optical drive in the body and I don't need one, and I wouldn't mind if it was just a tad lighter than it currently is. The SE was just updated though with some new SB cpus so I shouldn't hope for a redesign anytime soon anyways, wishfull thinking.

Yeah I understand what you mean, don't use the optical drive in my SA at all. Would prefer a bit better cooling and perhaps a little stronger GPU instead. One can dream...

x2. Especially the cooling part- please, no more wailing laptop fans. And of course a screen with improved color reproduction for the 15" SE. I wouldn't mind keeping the optical drive, the computer is plenty light, thin and that leaves the option of swapping in a second drive (ssd + hdd = crazy speed and cheap storage). Or an extra mdata ssd option would be ok too. :D

The tiny color gamut and hot cpu are the only things holding me back from buying this computer.

Thanks for posting the pic Eddieaus! Looks nice. Looks like maybe a release not too long after Ivy Bridge is announced on the 23rd?

Do you know if the docking station has been upgraded with USB 3.0 ports at all?

Also, any changes to the screen? Will the 1080p Matte still be available? Maybe even a better version of it?

Any and all info is truly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

Looks like the only difference is a buttonless trackpad. And is that even an improvement?

apart from the trackpad, another major change is the optical drive will be slot-loading style just like the macbook pro. this will be the same on the new SA/SB/SC/SD/SE

No suspicion here, but where are people getting these photos, posted without attribution (not just for the SE, but various others on these threads)? Also, what does "*VAIO not included" mean?

I can only guess this is a press / photo for the dock only. Its possible the dock has changed for the updated series too? Im hoping it has USB 3.0 built in.

Obviously some connection to Sony is needed to get those photos. Btw. IIRC eddieaus was the one who posted the first photos of the Z2 before it was announced.

And as HKINGS already mentioned, this is the product photo for the dock, that's why the Vaio is not included.

Will the slot-loading drive reduce the weight of the computer? Any word on an updated / fixed panel with an improved color gamut? :D

Even with its small flaws SE still gets my vote as the best 15" laptop. Samsung dropped the ball on the 15" Series 9 NP900X4B (low-contrast screen, bad viewing angles, weak performance) and Dell, HP & Apple are still offering porky high-gloss computers with weight and thickness that hark back to the last decade.

I'm with you Brian Boy... Im selling my Dell XPS 15 L502X to get one of these new SE's.... Im pretty sure anyways.

The FHD screen on the Dell is excellent, but the reflections from the glossy screen are killing me and Im just not using the JBL speakers as much as I thought I would (even though they are excellent as well). In general, the thing is a heavy monster and I think the SE is a whole 2 pounds lighter.

Like yourself, Im hoping to find out if the new SE has an improved color gamut, but its not a deal breaker. Ive seen the screen in person and its not a deal breaker at all. Im jut hoping the Dock has a USB 3.0 port.

A slot-loading blu-ray player would be very nice as well.

I think a big question here is whether Sony will offer a different IPS panel, one that doesn't have the red is orange issue. Since they haven't even acknowledged that with the VAIO SE they could just keep using the current flawed LG panel.

Anyway, like the slot loading feature, I'm not a fan of buttonless trackpads, but that's the direction everyone is going. Once again, Apple leads and the rest follow with design cues.

Starting to see a pattern here. The new Z won't be called Z3, the Sony Ultrabook will be a T, and the new SE won't be called SE.

Seems we'll see a reshuffle of letters in the coming months.

    this.

getting kind of frustrated with how tight lipped and how much Sony is dragging their feet with any sort of info regarding IB model refreshes, the new F series or whatever is replacing it. especially when every other company out there has by now released info of varying detail on upcoming IB refreshes.

maybe Sony is telling me to consider a Samsung instead?

^Sony isn't telling you anything. Nobody is really supposed to be releasing to press info on I/B sku's. Most of what you see are leaks. Anyhow, there is no F replacement.

Intel is really strict with their NDA embargo stuff, it's not because Sony doesn't want to tell I guess (or any other manufacturer for that matter). I'm not sure why because the only real 'competition' they have (AMD) is not even close with regards to performance in mobile products. Maybe it's to ensure people keep buying notebooks with current products and not delay to get the latest CPU.

So now that Ivy Bridge has been announced, why are announcements so slow for the new Ivy Bridge laptops?

Only device Sony has announced is the E Series Premium, haven't heard anything about other models, and very little from other manufacturers generally.

Anyway, looking forward to the new SA/SB announcement, the new E Series 14P is very close to what I'd like (near bang on in specs), but the battery life is a bit behind the 12 hours my SB has (+ slice battery) and it's quite thick in comparison. If the SB/SA was a smaller version of it with similar specs and higher price I'd definitely be happy to go for that.

With Windows 8 coming in October, manufacturers will have to release new models optimized for Windows 8. There could be touchscreen models or those with enhanced trackpads to better navigate the Metro start screen. Although current laptops designed for Windows 7 can run 8, the experience won't be as good as those made specifically for 8.

What are the chances sony will be announcing their new lineup at computex? or earlier?
