    Get em if you need 'em from Sony.

    This utility updates the Intel® PRO/Wireless Network Connection Driver with PROSet® Utility and resolves the following issues:

    * Addresses a security vulnerability
    * Resolves the memory use increase issue

    NOTE: This utility updates the Intel® 2200BG driver to version 9.0.4.17 and the Intel® 3945ABG/BG driver to version 10.5.1.59.

    Have you run this update yet? Any issues? Reason I ask is the last time I ran Sony's update it borked my wireless and I ended up having to go download the software direct from Intel to get it to work again, so I'm a little gun shy on this one.

    Eek! :eek:

    Seems my suspicions were not completely without merit. It appears that Sony is already aware of an issue present in this update. Found the following (in red text, no less) in the update instructions:

    "Important Notes
    Some parts of the pre-installed VAIO Wireless Switching Utility may no longer function properly after installing the update. Sony is working to provide an update to the Wireless Switching Utility that will restore full functionality. Please check your model update page periodically for new updates.
    Please click here for instructions on how to manually switch between wireless services.
    "

    So that begs the question if they know it is buggy, then why are they still offering it as an update before they've fixed the issue?

    There are also updated drivers on the Intel site. ( http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/cs-010623.htm)

    I used those since Sony's eSupport is not letting me download the newer drivers (there's also the problem that the network card model they have listed on the Sony site is not the right one, even though i'm browsing the right SZ model ... mine doesn't have the Intel 2200, it has the 3945)

    I'm using the latest Intel drivers (from Intel's site) and they cause SmartWi to use full CPU as long as it's running.

    I'm using them right now. everything works perfectly except now it uses the intel wireless utility instead of the windows utility. mem usage for s24evmon is around 12,104k.

    Well, you installed the full ProSet Wireless package. Just go to the Intel download site and get the driver only package (its just a 5MB thingie), uninstall ProSet Wireless and point the hardware installation wizard that appears at the folder where the new drivers are. You'll have the newest drivers but will use the windows zero config. And all the features of the driver are still there, they can be found via the device properties of the wifi device in the device manager.
