The DVD driver could be corrupted... or missing.
Access the Control Panel then System, then Hardware and then Device Manager to see if there are any Exclamations identifying a problem devices for the laptop.
It may be as easy as updating and reloading the driver for the DVD player.

Another problem to check might be software related.... If the laptop cannot find the software or Codec to play the DVD. You might need to reload the software that plays the DVD.

    Hi,
Many thanks for your speedy response. I have done as suggested and not only is there no indication of a problem ,when I checked further the indication was that the driver is working properly. I am a total novice but suspect it is a software problem however I do not know how to reload the software. Do I have to use the original boot disc please?

Check the Sony Support site, see if you have a Registry Update - would be listed under CD/DVD drives. My daughter's computer did same thing for a bit, the update fixed it - worked great after that without issue.
