    Hey.

Just wondering if this is worth the switch:

    Z13 - 2780$
    FullHD 1080P
    256GB SSD
    Glossy Carbon Fiber
    Intel i7/640M

    Z12- 1780$
    1600x900
    128GB SSD
    Premium Carbon Fiber
    Intel i7/620M

Is it worth the the upgrade? Is the FULL HD worth the switch? I read around forum that its the same display as 16x9 except the 20% increase in space. I am talking about the RGB % and the clarity of both the screens.

    Thanks.

I think some have said that the 1600x900 screen is actually brighter and more viewable outdoors as well, but I'm not certain about that.

The main and almost only difference between the two is the resolution. Everything else (colour, viewing angles) is the same, except the 1080p may be slightly darker.

If you want Full HD to get more screen real estate, make sure you will be able to handle that additional screen real estate on a 13.1" screen. You'll need good eyes and to sit very close to be able to use it.

I'd say 1600x900 is pretty good at 100% scaling as it is.

$1000 for 128GB upgrade and screen "upgrade" which you may not even desire....

I personally would go for the Z12, $1780 for those specs is really good.

Ask yourself whether the full HD screen is gonna increase your productivity when you are carrying around the notebook with you all the time. If not, I think the money is better spent on a good and big external monitor for a cheaper price.

For me the high def screen is worth the extra real estate...I love the resolution as well, also. but not worth a 1k jump in price.
I have the z12 with 256 gb, and already I am running out of space. I wish I could have afforded the 500 gb SSD. That to me is worth a 1k jump in price.

nope not worth +$1k. But there's nothing that says you'd have to go for the Z13's i7-640m: the i5-580M is probably as fast or faster than the i7-620M but don't quote me on that. (nm it's only $60 more, in the US it's +150)

I was really on the fence myself regarding the screen, and opted for 1600x900 after seeing them in person @ the Sony Store. The extra screen real estate is not really needed for me, and I'd rather roll @ 1600 with 100% zoom than have to zoom anything. And I have 20:15 vision. I think FHD is just a little bit of e-peen (no offense to those!). [Web] Videos, [web] pictures, and programs not affected by Win7's font zooming will all look bigger and better on 1600x900 100% zoom, or so I'm hoping. Lastly, Windows and gaming performance, as well as battery life and outdoor viewing, should all theoretically be slightly better at 1600x900.

The 128gb you may find a little small though. Hopefully you don't do too much gaming or torrenting. Just get an external USB drive if you're hurting for media space, they're small and cheap nowadays.

I don't get how people run out of space with 256GB. My desktop HDD with 160 gigs isnt even close to half full. And I have lots of mp3's. Unless your downloading full illegal movies and lots of , 256 should be enough.

edit: actually a rule of them for SSD's is to leave around 20% of its capacity as free space

I would have never thought I would run out of 256 GB so soon. I have lots of video content for my profession (40 GB of review courses, 20 GB of my own surgeries) and I am constantly adding stuff.
On that note, since I am running out of space, I am looking for a virtual (internet based hard drive) any one can recommend one? (I would prefer not to carry around a usb or hard drive)

An example: installing Native Instruments Komplete 7 takes about 85 GB for various piano samples and standard factory library. Not saying that you should constantly have it on Z or that one would need it all. Just an interesting fact.

Something like Mass Effect 2 game takes 18 GB right there.

Remember times when 40 MB disk was considered a lot of space?

If you are running those types of applications, common sense will tell you, DONT GET 128GB SSD.

Zonules, I recommend that you look into Amazon S3. It is way more affordable than most cloud storage services. And you can link to your content and stream it to your laptop. If I'm not mistaken they charge $0.10/Gb per month for storage. That's $10 for every 100Gb. You can also opt for services like Carbonite; but be aware that Carbonite and other such services synchronize your folders--so if you back up to the cloud, then delete files on your system, Carbonite will also delete your backup copy.

    Hope this helps.

Hi every one, 2 weeks a go I was almost getting the VPC-Z1290 with i7 620, 128ssd, 1920x1080, 4gb ram. price was $1906 Canadian before taxes (it is a very good price I think) but if I replaced the 128ssd buy 256ssd the price will jump to $2256 and the VPC-Z1390 become cheaper with the same components and just the i7 640 instead of the i7 620 at $2216.
After the VPC-Z1390 came out I was wandering some changes but i found non valuable compared with the options already available for the Z1290 !!!
Then 3 days ago I ordered the Z1290 with 128ssd (since I don't need any more hard drive space because all work will be transferred every night to server storage)
I wanted to ask if I have made a good choice getting the z1290 any way, even after the z1390 came out if I don't need bigger hard drive and if there is any significant changes that the Z1390 have and are not present in the z1290 option?
    thank you for your help
