    Hi all!

I bought a VGN-G2AAPS last year, from a Japanese colleague. The laptop was brand new,and it came preloaded with Pro XP version of Windows.I was ,and still am,extremelly pleased with the way it handles the jobs I entrust it with.

However,a few days ago I managed to crack the LCD  ...I cannot even begin to say how mad I was.The screen is still usable,as is the laptop. But I wish to replace the screen and I cannot find anywhere this item being sold. And it is unbelievable how scarce is the service for this laptop in Europe. For instance,I cannot find a service manual for this item,or drivers and stuff.Anyway, long story short, here are the specs for the LCD screen:

    Sony Vaio VGN-G Series VGN-G2AAPS 12.1" XGA

    Size: 12.1 inches
    Condition: New
    Resolution: 1024 x 768 pixels
    (known as "XGA")
Screen Type: TFT Active Matrix with LED backlight
    Aspect Ratio: Standard

Two companies I've located are not selling this item, although they advertise it on their respective websites.

I came here to you guys, perhaps anyone will have an idea how can I sort out my laptop.Nevertheless, any help would be greatly appreciated,in any shape that might appear. What do I do?Shall I leave it as it is...but then again, would not the black spot get larger and larger?

I forgot to say the laptop is the Japanese version, with JP keyboard.

Please let me know your thoughts and if possible, help a fellow in need!

    Regards and thanks,

    Julian

I have both a G1 and a G2, but bought from importers who deal with Sony Japan so I can send mine back in for repair through them. YOu can deal with Sony Europe who did sell the laptop, or find someone in Japan to send it back to Sony there. Not much other choice.

Thanks FenderP,much appreciated.Since my laptop is not covered by Sony insurance anymore, isn't there any options for me to purchase some extended or third party warranty and repair it this way with Sony Europe?I have some quotes for such warranties, the best price I've got so far would be some 400 USD.Would this work?

I 'd be hanging around ,perhaps anyone will give me some indications on where these LCD's can be found,or perhaps I'll find a spare LCD.If I'm lucky.Fingers crossed.

Thanks again for your kind help.

    Regards,

    JT

Since the G wasn't sold in the USA at all, you're not finding spare parts here. I'm not sure if Sony Japan even sells just screens, let alone how to get them!

I don't think at this point you would find someone to give you a third party warranty, and it may look suspicious to them even if you got one if you submitted a warranty claim right away.

Since you're in Europe, just call your local Sony repair line and see how much it would cost, or if they could send you the part. It may be the easiest solution.

Sony Romania would charge me some 800 EUR,roughly 1000 USD for the replacement of this broken LCD.Sounds ridiculous, even for a nice piece of hardware such as G2.

A tad dissapointed though...I thought I'll sort this out with no problems. Now it seems this will be a rough ride for my lil'Vaio.
