So i want to create a partition on my 320gb vaio z hard drive so i can install windows 7 beta and dual boot vista and windows 7.

However i am running into a problem; when i try to partition using the built in partition tool once vista is done querying for available shrink space vista is telling me that i can only shrink 9.9gb out of my available 296gb of space left.

Now i ran a defrag, deleted old system restores and shadown copies and the available size hasn't changed.

Not sure what to do, help?

    Thanks

If this should be moved go ahead, but i figured i'd post here first in case this is some kind of weird "sony issue."

The problem is that there are MFT entries near the end of the disk, you need to use a defrag tool that can defrag the MFT.

I recently had the same problem getting space for an XP partition a the end of my drive on a Vaio FW.

I used PerfectDisk 2008 (14day fully functional trial HERE) to do a 'boot time' defrag which cleared the space at the end of the drive so that I was able to make a 20GB partition for XP using the Vista 'Shrink'.

Ok, so before you responded i did what you suggested using various internet searches and was able to free up a lot of space on my HD. However at that point the vista partition utility wasn't allowing me to shrink the new available data; was giving me a logical disk error: access denied.

So i tried running another defrag and now my "available" space to shrink is 302mb!! ?! Am i using perfectdisk incorrectly? This is getting rather annoying for such a simple task.

Also, it never seems like my HD fully defrags; it goes and goes and goes and when i come back it has finished but way ahead of the estimated time. It will be going at like 40-60% defragged and then i'll come back and it's magically done.

Any more help would be greatly appreciated
