My son (at college) had his 18 month old (now discontinued) Sony FJ270/B notebook ($1200.00 new) fried by a Gatorade spill...is there a comparable new Sony notebook that would be a suitable replacement? Someone mentioned the Vaio VGNNR 160ES 15.4" screen that is on sale at Circuit City for $679.00. This may have alot in the package, but I am concerned about this budget laptop lasting...Any recommendations??

Sorry, but the VGNNR 160ES doesn't seem to excist, maybe it's a typo in the model nr? Without any specification it's difficult to say anything about it. Of course if you're gonna replace a 1200$ notebook with a 700$ notebook you might expect to get a bit less notebook.
Maybe you should fill out the FAQ if you want us to help you find the ideal notebook for your budget and your sons use.

AH, got it, i wasn't really looking with my eyes open i think. That actually isn't a bad deal. I found a nice review of it here if you want to read it:

I do think you'll need to upgrade the ram to 2Gb for Vista HP otherwise the notebook will run rather sluggish, but overall it seems to be a good notebook for college use. It might be a little bigger and heavier then your sons old notebook, and it won't be very good for games, but if that isn't a problem then it's a very nice notebook for a college boy i think. It will be a lot faster and powerfull then the notebook it is replacing actually.
