I am going to buy customized VAIO Z. And i'm thinking about getting it with Blu-ray read/write drive ($500). Is it worth?

Or should i get external drive? What do you think? I've heard that Its not a good idea to have BD writer in notebook since it makes the notebook hot.

Also should i wait for next models? Is there something like Apple with Sony notebooks? Apple updates its line every year constantly, i'm not sure about whether its same with Sony or not.

This question has been asked and answered several times over in the 'Z Owners Thread' forum. I would suggest searching in there first. Lot's of great info on the pros and cons. Good luck.

Only you will know the answer on whether the Blu-ray drive is worth it or not... I'm not being unhelpful but this question is subjective.

IMO, $500 blu-ray drive for watching movies on a 13" laptop is waste of money. Unless you are going to hook your laptop to a decently large HDTV through the HDMI link, its not worth the money. And even that, you can buy a much capable blu-ray player by Sony or Samsung for half the cost. I'll wait until the price is below $200 before I ever consider blu-ray for laptops.

But few things off my head might justify buying one:
    1) if you (already) have a large blu-ray collections and you like to take them with you on your travels

    2) aside from the thermal issues, if you think you'll be burning blu rays (if the measly 4.7 GB of a DVD is not enough for you :))

    3) if you are gung-ho about new technology and gadgets no matter the cost

Backups to a BD would be much easier (but much more expensive too). Right now, blank BDs are ridiculously expensive, much like dual layer DVDs.
