NTI Shadow works well for automated file backup onto an external drive. It keeps files in their native format so you can access them without any special software.

There are two other strategies that would give you access to your files without carrying around an external drive:

    1) Synchronize files on two machines using Microsoft's free FolderShare ( https://www.foldershare.com/). Foldershare works in the background to synchronize files between two computers whenever both machines are online. You would need enough space on your laptop hard drive for all the files you want to keep synched.

    2) Services such as LogMeIn and GoToMyPC provide remote access to files over the Internet without worring about backing up or synching. This only works when both machines are online.
