My sister had her internal hard drive go bad, I'm not sure what was wrong with it, but her web button worked, she could get online, but she could not load windows. We couldn't get the recovery disks to fix the problem...

Fast forward, she took the laptop to Best Buy and they put in a new hard drive but they didn't install the OS. Now I'm trying to install the OS and am getting absolutely nowhere. Here is the problem:

When I put in the Sony Recovery Disk #1 and boot the machine, I get the windows boot manager and my options are "Start Vaio Recovery Center" and "Repair Windows 7 (64 Bit)" When I click "Start Vaio Recovery Center' I get to the VAIO Recovery Center where I can click "Vaio Hardware Diagnostics", Restore C: Drive", "Restore Complete System", "Rescue Data", and "Wipe and Erase Data". I have ran the diagnostics and no help. I clicked on "Restore C: Drive" and did both the "Vaio Hardware Diagnostics" and "Skip" on the next screen and still get nowhere. When I click "Skip", I get a warning that my hard drive is about to be formatted and what not, and I click I understand. and then click Yes I'm sure. The next screen is an error screen saying "Could not obtain a recovery drive letter" I can't get any farther than this. I get the same error if I enter through "restore complete system" at the top level and then click "Restore C: Drive" on the next menu.

If I select "Restore Complete System", I have two choices, "VAIO Hardware Diagnostics" and "Restore C: Drive", and "Skip". When I click "Skip", it looks like I'm getting somewhere, I am asked if I want to keep the VAIO Valued-added contents as part of the recovery drive. If I click next with "YES" selected, I am asked if I want to keep my default C: drive size and have a yes and a no button. If I click next with "NO" selected, I have an option to keep the storage at the Original factory-installed state (recommended), Allocate all the space to the C: drive, and Customized drive size. If I select "Allocate all the space to the C: drive" and then hit next, then I understand, then start, and then I'm sure, it starts a countdown from 10. When it gets to 0, it starts formatting and gets to 4%. At 4% (every time) I get a "Restore Complete System" dialog box that says "An Error occurred while executing an application" and the computer needs to shut down, Error code 332 and it shuts down my computer. I get the same error no matter what I select to do with my hard drive settings...

I did the "Wipe and Erase" and that seemed for format the hard drive but didn't ever help with my ability to load the stinkn' OS back on this machine.

Starting over, if I reboot my computer and select "Repair Windows 7" i have an option to restore my computer from a system image, which I don't have. I thought that's what the recovery disks would do but apparently not. If I hit next like I do have an image to recover from and then cancel on the next popup that says it couldn't find the image, I get to another "System Recovery Options" interface and my options are Start-up Repair, System Restore, System Image Recovery, Windows Memory Diagnostics, and Command Prompt. Nothing in those prompts can get the OS installed. I've literally tried them all.

When enter the command prompt, the only drives that seem to be assigned are X:\Windows\system32 and F:\

I don't know if Best Buy did something to the hard drive when they installed it, like installing a partition, but I'm completely lost now. I have no idea what could be going on and I'm about to throw this laptop off a railroad track overpass just as a coal laden train comes barreling down the tracks.

I went to best buy and bought a new hard drive. I put it in, put in the first recovery disk and everything is working as expected. I guess Best Buy put some stupid partition on the drive that rendered my recovery disks useless.. Dang you Best Buy!

Has anyone found a solution to this issue? I also just had a hard drive replaced, and obtain the 332 error every time at 4%. Is the problem with my recovery disks, or did the technicians do something funny with the new hard drive? Please help!
