I need to perform a clean install on a sony vaio (its not mine actually is own by my friend).

I search in this forum and I found this guide which is very clear:

Sony eSupport - Electronics - Support Information

The thing I don't understand is...

HOW can I perform a clean install with windows on, when normally I always booted up the pc with the windows 7 dvd?
    Is actually really working?

One more thing, I downloaded from this thread windows home premium version:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-digitalriver-windows-7-sp1-13-languages.html

Will this copy work with my friend laptop? Cause I tried to burn it on a dvd and boot the Vaio from it, but it doesn't work, the BIOS is set correctly, but windows doesn't start from the DVD and the screen stays black.
And when I boot normally windows and tried to run the installation from the DVD, I got an error that says: "cannot create setup folder" or something like that.

I guess its probably a corrupted file? I will download it again tonight, meanwhile,

Someone have any suggestions? Thanks all in advance.

Sounds like a bad DVD burn or a broke DVD drive.

Don't worry about the Windows flavor (Home, Pro, Ult) when it comes to service packs. You just need to match the version; 32-bit or 64-bit.

    Thank you ZoinksS2k.

Perhaps it could also be a bad downloaded file since I tried to open up the win7 ISO with POWERISO and run the startup on my laptop. it gives me the same error "cannot create setup folder" and about the DVD drive I confirm that is working.

I will look up into the microsoft forum for this error.

How about the clean installation process? Do I have to run it from windows or boot from the win 7 DVD?
My friend asked me to erase the recovery partition, and since the laptop is not mine, I just want to make sure he will be able to reinstall windows from a DVD in the future is something will happen again.

By the way is model is VGN-NW21EF/S

What is the OS on the recovery partition? If it is Win 7, then deleting it might not be such a good idea. Anything else and you can nuke it.

BTW. those Windows 7 links are for complete Windows 7 with service pack 1 already integrated. If you want to download just the service pack, you can do that from Microsoft download, or use Windows Update.

The OS on the recovery partition is win7. But anyway is not about the SP windows version or not, the problem is how to install it. But thanks for your Help. ;)

I just wanted to know from those who did it in the past, how to install a clean copy of win 7, because this VAIO for some strange reasons doesn't boot from the win 7 DVD (just got a black screen).

Try the DVD in another system to confirm that it is indeed bootable - sometimes there can be errors in downloading and burning process.

If it is bootable, then your DVD drive might be giving problems. Try an external USB DVD drive. Or you can make a bootable Windows 7 flash pen drive and boot from that. There are plenty of tutorials on the net about how to do that.

Yup, USB bootable drive, it's exactly what I was thinking about. I will try it tonight as soon as I come back at home, and I'll try to download again the win 7 iso. ;)

I did search, but I didn't find much about this type of model;VGN-NW21EF/S.

EDIT: Thanks all, I just wanted to say that I found the issue, the downloaded ISO copy was bad.
After downloaded it again last night and boot the VAIO from a USB all the issues were gone!

Thanks again for the help everyone! :)
