There will be a new 15" VAIO range coming next month. These new models look just like the current SB series, except bigger (obviously) and have number pad. They are the new SE series.

Cool! I always thought that the S was better looking than the E or C. A scaled-up S would be a handsome machine indeed.
I'm also curious about display quality, audio quality, CPU, and GPU, but I guess we'll have to just wait and see. I'm worried that they'll nerf the screen quality and/or performance specs to differentiate it from the F2.
What I'd love to see:
A respectable screen, even if it's a step down from the F2. Not the washed-out screen of the current S.
Good speakers. I've heard awful stuff about the onboard audio of the 13" S.
Switchable, powerful GPU. With a physical switch, not Optimus.
Five hours of realistic web browsing use.
Available i7.
Adequate cooling for some gaming, even though it's obviously not a "gaming rig." -
Dual core and switchable graphics. No quads.
The panels on the prepro units i've seen were stunning. 1080P only for this platform. -
This may supersede the F22 as the machine I'm going to treat myself to in December. I'd be happy to trade a quad-core CPU for a switchable GPU (which the F22 of course lacks), provided the GPU was sufficiently powerful for the sort of casual gaming I do (I want at least 540M power, ideally more). -

After looking at both the SC and the F2 during lunch today, I think the SE would not be for me. While the extra battery life and portability would be nice, I personally care more about the solidity the F2 offers. And while the SC didn't feel cheap or poorly put together, neither its keyboard nor its case felt as premium as the F2's.
Regardless, I think the SC has a lot of promise, and I think it could be a very good performance-and-portability option that should make a lot of people happy. It sounds like it'll fit about the same balance of power and portability that a MBP 15 has, but without the insane price tag. -
Nice to see Sony putting some effort into their 15"+ laptops again. Hope they'd use the 15.5" 1080p CB series screens on these lappies. Great contrast FTW.
Hmm.. another comp on my "want to buy" list for sure. Hope Sony would quickly adopt Ivy Bridge when the platform comes out Q1 2012. -
Is Sony doing a sheet battery for this?

Any general comments about the size/weight?

(also a 500GB Momentus XT if you count that), but that's it...

the new SE series, coming in September

Looks nice...
Thanks for the pic! -
That is indeed nice and good choice on the dual core and not quad and ATI videocard. Less heat and should have lower temperatures than the SB since it isn't as compact. I also always loved the SB design and glad to see it in a larger form. Finally a laptop worthy of replacing my FW.

Eddieaus, that looks just fantastic. Great looking machine. Are you allowed to say if the SE's display is "vaio display plus" or "vaio display premium"?
Decisions, decisions...still tempted by the SE, but I do really love the F22... -
I don't really know the specs, I'd expect it to be at least on par with the quality seen on CB series. -
Eddieaus, a little off topic but since you seem to have some inside know-what, is there any chance of the vaio sa getting a better screen? I love the everything about that machine except that screen (the one thing keeping me from buying it).
-
whoa! looks thin too. any chance its going going to have backlit keys?
-
-
It has backlit kb.
-
Yeah, you can see the backlighting in the teaser photo of the SE on page one.
-
i just hope this has good build quality, a Z like quality lcd and SSD config. :]
-
-
Sony will make sure to include a crappy GPU.
-
It will be interesting to see of it includes Z-type high-end options in addition to the display such as SSDs, Blu-ray burner, etc.
-
So, what ever happened, is this still planed for release? I know it was announced and a few sites had a hands on with it, but so far that seem about it. How does the screen compare, is it closer to the Z or SA in terms of quality, and viewing angles(contrast and color gamut also if it is known)?
On a related note, do you guys in the know if Sony has plans for a 14in model with at the very least a 900p display(that is closer to quality of the Z)? Thanks. -
