    After installing the new BIOS, I lost the ability to use the "Fn" key and the shortcut s1 and s2 buttons. Meaning I can't lower/raise the screen birghtness and volume.

    I went into vaio central to try to program the shortcut bottuns but I get an error that says "you can't launch."

    Any help is appreciated.

    Same thing happened to me. Press the S1 button multiple times until the balloon appears. Click on the balloon and get the dialog box offering options. Change the default S1 and S2 to something else, click apply. Then revert back to the default, click apply. Should work fine. At least it did for me. Seems that the settings can be lost.

    What about your function keys?

    I'll try what you suggested.

    if bios was installed correctly, nothing should happen. Sounds like an isolated issue

    Didn't check the Fn keys beforehand. They work currently (as do S1/S2)

    My S1/S2 and function buttons work just fine after the BIOS update as well as the new graphics driver install.

    ok i fixed it. it turns out if i have my notbook set to hibernate never, it will offset the setting i used when closing the lid. So i set it to 6 hours on battery and now it works fine.

    I think I'm the only one with this issue. So I think I will just backup my data and do a semi-clean install like when I first received the notebook.

    Will a reformat bring it back to the original BIOS?

    Your BIOS will remain the same unfortunately.

    FenderP, did you do your bios update from the Dynamism CD? I received one with Ghost image. Don't want to do a complete rebuild!!!!!!!! Seems like I should be able to update bios w/o complete rebuild. Is that what you did for your SZ90? Thanks! :)

    Er, didn't get a CD/DVD from Dynamism (although in the past when I ask, they give it ...) when I got my SZ90.

    I just ran the SZ90 update which I downloaded from the Sony Japan site and it works just fine. No problems.

    After hearing about one person's SZ90 not able to restart after bios update, can someone verify that the bios upgrade is the same for all SZ models? Note the comment:

    WARNING!!: This utility is only for use with the following Sony® VAIO® computers sold in the United States, Canada, or Latin America:

    * VGN-SZ110
    * VGN-SZ120P
    * VGN-SZ140
    * VGN-SZ140P
    * VGN-SZ150P
    * VGN-SZ160P
    * VGN-SZ170FP
    * VGN-SZ170P
    * VGN-SZ180P

    Do not install this utility on any other models.

    I don't see SZ90 in this list. I don't want to just presume and shot myself in the foot.
