Is it just a BIOS only for european new SZ6-series, or is it a whole new BIOS for Sz650/680.., i mean all models?
Cos, you know, there are some bugs in SZ6s.
i have heard that SZ6s have brightness bug, that brightness resets after shutdown, sofreset e.t.c or something else.
maybe this BIOS ver. solves issue with brigthness and with also battery (some owners complain, that after a full charge of the battery (100%), then shutdown, after a week, and even less, battery drains much, up to 50%).

Also there was a supposition that problems with screen (yellow or other colors bands) - is a software bug of new videocard, bad bios, or drivers...
of course light leakage could not be a software bug, it's dull. but yellow bands could be.
so, please, who has a list of those bugs, install a new BIOS, and check it out.

Ok, just installed this...system seems slowed down again, but probably nothing to do with the BIOS (hdd is quite active again, same problem I had last week it seems - seems to happen when the laptop's battery is not full and I'm recharging it whilst using Windows...). Anyways, I may test how the battery drains if I just leave the laptop off and not connected to the power.

jimmy-floyd, when you mention 50% drainage, thats without using the laptop at all during a week I assume yes?

yes without using a laptop during a week, this info is from my 2 pals, who have such bug. not exactly 50%, but up to 50%, usually nearly 30%.

Ivan with P1 is talking with Sony service at the moment, he's going to reply back with what we need to do...my SZ6 just came in last night and is doing the same thing in Stamina mode, so I'll let them find out for me since it's a brand new laptop (they said that the drivers and Bios were up to date)

I'll keep you updated if anything comes up, but if they don't have anything new it looks as if this is the current solution to the problem...but the funny thing is no one can explain why they aren't supplying it to the US market, much less even admit they have a problem.

Has anyone installed this and tested it? Seems like a pretty significant update.

I installed the update on my SZ61XN/C and it works great. I did not experience any of the issues because i did the update right away so I cant comment if it fixed the problem :)

    Dear Fellas,

I experienced the problem with brightness keys since I bought it. I tried the sony support chat with no progress at all. I mentioned my problem in an earlier post and a guy call lurkingfool (god bless him!) told me to install this update.

After installing the update on my Sony Vaio SZ-650N/C the problem is solved and a lot of headaches are now history! moreover, THIS UPDATE WORKED FINE AND I HAVE NOT A SINGLE PROBLEM RIGHT NOW.

So, if you are concerned with the compatibility of the update, I can assure you that it is working like charm on my sexy laptop.

To everybody who upgraded a non-Santa Rosa SZ with the new BIOS and has DDR2-667 RAM installed:
Is the memory now running at full DDR2-667 Speed?

How do you know if this BIOS update works on your SZ250 if you haven't even attempted to flash it? It's not compatible with my SZ1.

I wonder if anyone can read the bios file and find where to switch on the vt-x switch in the bios so that our laptops can perform better with virtual pc

If you want to take on the task of finding the VT token for this BIOS update with symcmos, please PM me your symbol table (the file generated from symcmos -lFILENAME). I'll compare it with my SZ1 tables and try to help narrow your search.

does it matter if we download the BIOS update from the Asia or German Sony sites? Or are they exactly the same?

You need to install the Sony Notebook Control (or Firmware Extension Parser Device) and Programmable I/O drivers and all the important Sony utilities (Sony Utils DLL, Sony Shared Library, Sony Setting Utilities, VAIO Event Service) so that WBFlash can recognize your notebook. Run pc_info.exe in %programfiles%\Common Files\Sony Shared\PC_Info to see if it recognizes the model correctly.

well i flashed the bios, but my fn keys for brightness didnt work in the first place so they still don't :)

but then again, i just use the power options and it will change the brightness for me so no problem

I updated to this new bios a week ago from the Sony UK website, even though I have a US SZ680, and it works brilliantly - no problems with brightness or anything. My SZ has been set up using the semi-clean install method so I wonder if other people's problems stem from using the clean install method?

clean install is much faster so i dont care if i can't use the fn brightness key, because all i have to do is click the battery and change the power plan and it will change it for me.

not to mention only have about 40 processes with a clean install compared to over 60 or so with a semi clean, over 90 with no changes

Erm yes, I have 75 processes running when idle on my SZ680 (but that does include Skype, Bluetooth headset, Bluetooth keyboard & mouse, AVG anti-virus, and so on). I checked the whole list of "services" carefully against this one and I couldn't find any that were supposed to be worth switching off.

Anyway, I suppose one of the 35 processes my SZ has which yours doesn't must be the one that looks after screen brightness ;-)

Btw, when you say you have 40 processes running, is this with windows "idle"? Please could you let us have a list of your running processes, post a screenshot of task manager or something - would be really handy. Maybe I can stop a few of mine. I can't do a clean install because I have no VISTA disk...
