I'm almost certain that every SZ has an identical motherboard, it's just the peripherals that are different, so I gave it a shot. Luckily the flash went smoothly without any error messages. I did notice some differences in the BIOS settings though: the option to enable the VAIO start up sound is gone (sound is always off) and the TPM settings are rearranged.

Which SZ are you using and what's its current BIOS version? My previous BIOS version was 94N0.

Do you get an error like this:

or from the actual flash program? If it's the former, you can bypass that by using the model.txt trick or using Universal Extractor. If the actual flash program (winphlash) says it's incompatible, it won't work.

On Sonysupport Site for SZ1xx-3xx, I have found only 1 update Bios: R0083N0, which resolves some issues. So could you tell us what your SZ has benefited from new Bios?
    Thanks

No, it's not the error message on your screenshot. When I start the winplash.exe, after extraction with WinRar od UE, I get following error message:

I wonder why it says r0083n0.wph in that error message. Double check to see if you're at version 94n0 or try running the 94n0 update if you haven't already, then try updating the newest version again. If all else fails I recommend you wait until Sony releases a BIOS update for your version.

I didn't. I did try to flash and rename my file to bios.wph (it's default name for WinFlash) and than tried again und rename the file as R0083N0 instead of R0095N0 (my screenshot post #17). I could and I did change the name of the file only. Unfortunately I don't know any possibility to downflash a sony bios.

    You can "downflash".
I am now running R0112N0 but checked if I could downgrade as before and it worked.
    It works on sz 260p/c

I save the copy of my previous bios in my temp folder, then upgrade with new one.

after it takes the new bios I go to my temp folder and run the old bios and it reinstalls it.

Can the people running thew RN011 BIOS post what the differences are? I'm debating on flashing it but not if it doesn't add anything that I use. Thanks in advance.

Not sure if these are benefits.
You don't have the Sony logo with the sound in the start up anymore,
and system volume level in the Bios is gone. I am not sure what improvements it made with the biometric but Vista already fixed that( lot more sensitive then in XP).

As a lay person who knows not, I don't know why I upgraded other then just.....

I've flashed the R0112N0 BIOS on my SZ1M/B without problems.
The Sony Logo with sound is gone and the Intel Video BIOS is updated to 1356! Very fine!

Wow! The brightness controll in the mobility center is working in intel mode! THAT IS TRUE!

    Successfully updated to R0095N0 from R0094N0 on a SZ90PS

Haven`t noticed any changes and the computer seems a little more response. Don`t have biometric or TPM on my system so can`t see those changes.

Sound for the Vaio Logo on bootup is still there.

Sony just released R0096N0 for the SZ330 and I just flashed it. I was running the R00112N0 BIOS and the Intel brightness control worked but now with R0096N0 the brightness control doesn't work again. I'm going to try out R0096N0 for a while since it's the official flash for my laptop and then I might go back to R00112N0 again.

    Sony is stupid.

I flashed the 96N0 on my SZ330, but I am running XP.

As far as the brightness control goes, it works best with official Sony drivers. Sometimes installing the Sony driver first and then adding a later generic driver works also.

Any clue what 96N0 fixed/added? All it says is it adds Vista compatibility. Lame description.

The 96N0 doesn't support brightness control with Intel in Vista while the 112N0 does. However, in my opinion my SZ seems faster and more responsive when running 96N0. Also my CPU runs a LOT cooler when using 96N0.

I might just stick 96N0 and manually adjust the brightness for now.

What is CPU-Z? Under linux if I boot a kernel with vt support compiled in I get "KVM: disabled by BIOS" so it's definately off, but that is with the original bios. I wasn't going to bother with the new one since I didn't see anything about it here or through google about them enabling it. If no one can confirm it maybe I'll try it.

I just flashed it and I get the same message so it's still disabled. I've had this laptop close to a year now and I thought if I waited long enough sony would eventually add support for it but now I don't think they will. I don't understand why they won't support it I mean it's already there in the chip just enable it by default at least.

    Biumoc,

I'm running an SZ-220 and I was concerned with that issue since my previous battery died on me after 11months and I believe it's because it alway said "charging" even when batery was at 100%. I read on this forum that you can use 92N0 to get rid of that problem even though it's only for vista. I'm on XP home.

I installed it myself but as of right now my replacement battery from sony hasn't arrived so I can't tell you if it works for sure or not, but so far my laptop seems to be working fine so I don't think it poses a danger if you update the BIOS. Hope that helps... when I get my battery I'll update you for sure.

    Link for 92N0

    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNSZ220&upd_id=2572&os_id=27

    UPDATE:

I just got my new Sony Battery after 2days for free! With the new firmware I installed, the battery charges to 100% and then it stops charging constantly. It's nice! I think before with the old firmware, since the battery charged constantly, that is the reason the battery died on me.
