VAIO Z don't have mSATA ports, so this does not work.

The only way would be soldering this SSD to the proprietary SATA ribbon cable terminal. Alternatively, you can develop an adaptor.

i have a vaio VPCZ11C5E and currently have 2*256 gb msata crucials running with one adapter for each msata ssd:
mSATA to Micro SATA Adapter - mSATA - Adapters & Converters
i had to cut short the adapters little bit so it fits.

with Z11 you also need this connector: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/511578-how-replace-ssd-vaio-vpcz11-vpcz12-non-sony-ssd.html (mSATA cable for Z11: part number #A1781464A)

speed is ok, i think its limited to sata 2. read/write over 200 mb/s. no raid 0 configuration, just a bunch of drives.

i dont know if it is most efficient or so, but for me it works just fine.

    you need:
    1. mSata cable (or connector) with part number #A1781464A: http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Sony,Laptop,Part,A1781464A.aspx (see shipment costs for your location)
    - this cable will replace your current ZIF/LIF connection from motherboard to current SSD

    2. mSata to microSata adapter, this one: Amazon.com: Micro SATA Cables - mSATA to Micro SATA Adapter: Electronics (unfortunetly not available;i found no other source)
    - i ordered mine directly from Micro SATA Cables - also not available here -> call them for information
    - there is a difference between mSATA and m(icro)SATA, that's why you need this adapter

    3. Crucial M4 mSATA: CT256M4SSD3 - 256GB, mSATA Solid State Drive , from Crucial.com

I can post some photos with customized adapters the next days.

Thank you very much. How to make 2 x CT256M4SSD3 - 256GB = 500 GB connect to motherboard? and Is A1781464A have a connector at both ends, or it must be purchased separately?

The cable has two connectors for 2 drives.
You will be able to configure them RAID.

Your linked adapter is 2.5" and therefore will not fit. Also when i compare it with my adapter it is far too big. The adapter has to be 1.8".

I cut the adapter at the red line with a side cutter and rasp it smooth afterwards:
    short adapter.jpg

Then i put both adapters one above the other, so that the connector of the adapter look in opposite direction, the msata ssd's are on the "outside":
    P9053075.JPG

The green plates need to have full direct contact, so it will be most compact in height (otherwise it will not fit):
    P9053079.JPG

That's how it will look fully connected. The yellow cable is the msata cable you have to order and which will replace the old one:

hi, yes it seems like you are right about the compact length of the adapter. it looks perfect to fit the VPCZ1 without trimming, but in the end you have to test it.

I would test it, but I can't source the cable in the UK -- I've had one quote from the US who wanted 75USD to ship the part! Anyone know a European surce for the A1781464A?

Got the cable, and two Crucial 128GB SS, and can confirm that Mini PCIe mSATA to 1.8 MicroSATA adapter at Amazon works a treat with them: plenty of room, and no surgery necessary.

    Hello,
My SSD in my VPC-Z1190S has recently crashed and I am hoping to do something like this. I have a little experience working with computers but don't quite understand the specifics of replacing my SSD (even after going through many old threads).

I just want to replace my SSD in the easiest (hopefully cheap) way possible. I am not interested in high performance. I would just like to know what I need to buy starting from step 1.

Thank you in advance for any insight that you can provide.

maLente, you look like just the person I need to ask about this. I'm trying to do this upgrade for a user of mine, and I'm desperately worried that the resulting 2x adapters + 2x mSATA drives will be too thick to fit into the VPCZ1's casing. You seem to have the identical system and your 3rd picture of the "sandwich" looks much thicker then the two OEM microsata drives together. It still worked though?

I need to find 2x "single sided" msata drives then right? because some have chips on both sides that can prevent installation into an adapter?

edit: these look well reviewed and at a good price. Coupled with 2 of these adapters, I should be good to go right in terms of height/fit? (don't worry I won't come back and whine if they don't fit; I should be able to have my client return them if they don't work)

    Thanks anyone!

Numbers in crystalmark look just not good to me. With sata2 and raid0, you can get around 400MBps

    hi,
yes there is not much space for 3rd party mSATA SSD's in the VPCZ1. I still use these mSATA SSD's as posted at the beginning and it (barely) fits. The apdater from your links looks good to me, even better than the one i used.
But i cannot help you with the SSD's. I mean mSATA SSD's should all have the same size, but i dont know about reliablity and speed of this SSD.
If you will have problems with 2 SSD's than you always have the option to use one SSD with more capacity. Due to the fact that this notebook does only have SATA II connection, i think there is not much improvement with Raid0. I will stick with JBOD.

Besides mSATA there is also this micro SATA option: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/511578-how-replace-ssd-vaio-vpcz11-vpcz12-non-sony-ssd.html

Good luck with the replacement. ;)

    Hi
just dug out this thread, as it applies to my situation.
I am running out of harddisk space with my VPCZ12 that I bought 4 years ago. I still love it more than any of my laptops I used before (one lifebook, two thinkpads) because it's superfast and light as feather.
I am planning to install 2 Kingston mSATA SSDnow 120GB instead of the stock Toshibas, using the adapters from post 24. Alternatively I consider using one Crucial M550 with 256GB.
Advantage would be: lower price, lower power consumption, lower weight. The only thing I am afraid of is loss of speed. I often have to open rather bulky software (Autocad!) and I hate to wait.
@mal.ente: Wouldn't transfer speed double (at least theoretically), if two SATAII channels are used with RAID 0 - as each of them should provide 300 MB/s?
    Any other consideration?

Thanks to this thread, here's my replacement story:

    Sony Z11, originally 192GB RAID0, OEM Samsung 64GB x3.
    01-DSC00115.JPG 03-DSC00117.JPG 04-DSC00118.JPG

First, tried using minimal width, ultra-cheap, mSATA adapters off Ebay. Waited 2 weeks for shipment to arrive.
    05-DSC00119.JPG

Problem ended up being the large transistor? on the back of each increased the height significantly when stacked together. The mSATA connector on each adapter wasn't insignificant in height either.
    06-DSC00120.JPG 07-DSC00121.JPG

The height pushed up against the track-pad a bit and wasn't a workable long-term solution.
    10-DSC00124.JPG

So, I tried again with a wider and bit more expensive adapter that didn't have anything on the back of the adapter. The mSATA adapter was lower in height, and the mini-SATA connector didn't dip below the board (like the green one), so the overall height was much leaner.
    11-DSC00125.JPG 12-DSC00126.JPG

The fit was very tight on the width side, but it snapped in and height was perfect.
    13-DSC00127.JPG

    Now, 500GB RAID0, Samsung 840 Evo mSATA 250GB x2.

With either adapter, the HD area underneath the VAIO got very hot if I did any intensive HD operation, such as a once-a-year, or so, PerfectDisk SmartDefrag.

Before/after CrystalMark. Lost a bit of read speed going from 3xRAID0 to 2xRAID0 (or going from MLC to TLC), but gained on everything else.
    1-CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1 x64 2014-03-06 035252.jpg 2-CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1 x64 2014-04-08 014904.jpg

Nice part is these mSATA EVOs can probably travel with me to a Broadwell laptop or whatever comes up in 2016.

Just another +1 - followed the basic procedure outlined here on my VPCZ11, getting the micro SATA cable to replace the original weird custom PATA or whatever-the-hell-it-was one, ditching the 'cradle', and using the microsatacables.com adapter to install a Crucial M500 mSATA 120GB SSD, taping down loose bits. Seems to have done the job fine - restoring OSes now. Thanks for figuring all this out, everyone.

I have already change one of my four SSD during the garanty. My Z1 is now 6 years old and I have to think about changing my SSD. I wonder if there is a problem with the voltage ?
I'm not sure, but probably the actual SSD are in 3.3V and you talk about the new samsung 850 EVO, but this one is 5 Volt.
What about any problem with the voltage ?
